Placement
The
department
F1 General Surgical – Colorectal
This is a Colorectal unit and Ward F5 has 28 beds with patients
under the care of six consultants, Mr. Rate, Mr. Richards, Mr
Salman, Mr Byrne, Mr Afify and Mr Flook.
Mr. Rate and Mr. Richards are a combined team and cross cover for
each other, although teamwork is fostered throughout.
The unit admits both elective and emergency patients. Around 70 %
of the workload is colorectal and the rest is general surgery. The
ward cares for patients undergoing major surgery as well as
intermediate and minor ops. Patients are also distributed between
the other surgical wards, high dependency and ITU.

work to
expect and
learning
opportunities
All F1 Doctors in hospital posts will generally be ward based during
the ‘normal’ working day and expected to deliver the daily medical
care of all the patients on their ward irrespective of specialty. The
overall educational objectives of the F1 year are to provide the
trainee with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to
 Take a history and examine a patient
 Identify and synthesize problems
 Prescribe safely
 Keep an accurate and relevant medical record
 Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
 Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and
colleagues
 Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care
 Act in a professional manner at all times
 Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the
management of patients with general medical problems
 Educate patients effectively
 Become life-long learners and teachers
Trainees are closely supervised and expected to adhere to high
standards of medical competence. Trainees are expected to follow
guidance on maintaining core medical knowledge and comply with
infection control and aseptic practices.
Trainees work closely with members the MDT.
Teaching will be provided during consultant ward rounds, and from
other more senior doctors.
