Appendix C – Individual placement description North Western Foundation School Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust The Royal Oldham Hospital Programme Individual Placement Description Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities F2 Trauma & Orthopaedics The Orthopaedics department deals with trauma cases (based on T4, the trauma ward) as well as elective procedures (Ward T3). There are six Consultants, seven middle grades and six juniors, comprising one Trust doctor, one CT1 trainee, three FY2s and one FY1. There are daily trauma meetings on T4, weekly departmental teaching sessions and daily fracture and specialist orthopaedic clinics Trainees are expected to follow guidance on maintaining core medical knowledge and attend the protected FY2 Teaching programme. They must comply with Infection Control and Aseptic Practices Close supervision, especially by CT’s and middle grades, with opportunities for feedback to assess and guide practice Expected to follow guidance on maintaining core medical knowledge and comply with infection control and aseptic practices The trainee will communicate courteously and effectively will all their patients. They will have direct supervision when communicating with some patients and will learn how to communicate in more difficult situations by observing senior medical and nursing staff. They will learn to communicate effectively with colleagues from other specialities and within the MDT. Close working relationship with immediate seniors (including nursing staff) but also team working with all staff in the department (including paramedical and auxiliary staff). Liaising effectively with colleagues from other specialities, including General Practice. There is little opportunity for teaching and training but trainees are expected to teach and take part in the FY1 and FY2 Teaching programme. Trainees are also expected to attend the weekly departmental teaching sessions (Wednesday 8am to 9am). Reviewing sick patients on the ward and carrying out own ward rounds. On call commitments provide opportunities to see and manage all types of acute surgical emergencies in the Emergency department, Surgical assessment Unit and surgical wards Direct supervision at all times associated with teaching and supervision in practical procedures. FY2 Foundation Teaching Programme. Audit sessions Attending clinics. Attending Theatre. Opportunity to learn in trauma meetings every morning, weekly presentation provides teaching about a topic. Where the placement is based Ward T3/T4 Oldham Clinical Supervisor(s) for the Mr Jacobs placement Main duties of the placement The FY2 is responsible for Mr Jacobs patients’ day-to-day care on the wards but ward jobs are usually shared between the juniors regardless of consultant. In addition, pre-operative stabilisation of trauma patients and preoperative assessment of elective patients are also required. Discharge letters should be dictated after a patient is discharged. The trainee is on a partial shift rota. When on call, the FY2 cross covers Urology, General Surgery and Trauma & Orthopaedics. Acute care of patients on wards and new admissions can be experienced.
