Placement F1 Medicine – Respiratory The department The Respiratory department is run under two consultants and has 25 beds in total. The consultants each have a registrar and and/or ST/FY2 trainee. They also provide outpatient clinics to and bronchoscopy lists All F1 Doctors in hospital posts will generally be ward based during the ‘normal’ working day and expected to deliver the daily medical care of all the patients on their ward irrespective of specialty. The overall educational objectives of the F1 year are to provide the trainee with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to Take a history and examine a patient Identify and synthesize problems Prescribe safely Keep an accurate and relevant medical record Manage time and clinical priorities effectively Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care Act in a professional manner at all times Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems Educate patients effectively Become life-long learners and teachers The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Trainees are closely supervised and expected to adhere to high standards of medical competence. Trainees are expected to follow guidance on maintaining core medical knowledge and comply with infection control and aseptic practices. Trainees work closely with members the MDT. Teaching will be provided during consultant ward rounds, and from other more senior doctors. Where the placement is based Clinical Supervisor(s) for the placement Main duties of the placement Typical working pattern in this placement F7 Respiratory ward, The Royal Oldham Hospital Dr W Thomas Your role will be to ensure that all the ward jobs (created by the ward round) are completed and recorded. These include writing blood cards, taking difficult bloods (those the phlebotomists and nurses are unable to do), cannulation, TTOs etc. You will assist the teams on the ward rounds and write in the notes.
