Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Where the placement is based Clinical Supervisor(s) for the placement Main duties of the placement Track 26 FY1 HPB x 6 The largest tertiary HPB unit in North West providing care for both hepatic and pancreatic diseases. The unit is multidisciplinary offering patients a combination of medical, interventional radiology and surgical treatments in a learning environment. There are 5 surgeons, 4 gastroenterologists, 6 radiologist and two oncologists providing treatment for a wide range of conditions The FY1’s are encouraged to work as a team providing both elective and emergency surgical care. The unit is on-call for general surgery alternate weeks and there is a high through put of complex HPB cases with daily theatre lists. The FY1’s responsibility is to care for the ward based patients undergoing both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Trainees are encouraged to follow patients through their treatment to promote understanding and encourage learning from clinical exposure. The emergency surgery is covered by rota and trainees have the opportunity to observe acute surgical admissions from presentation and follow the patients through their treatment to encourage a more rounded surgical education HPB unit NMGH Mr Sherlock, Deshpande, O’Reilly, DeLiguori, Prof Ammori Typical ward round duties, carry out general ward work duties.
