With sales of £1.5 billion in 2011, the business is focused around three major product areas - aerostructures, engine products and transparencies, plus a number of specialist products - electro-thermal ice protection, fuel and flotation systems, and bullet resistant glass. The business has significant participation on most major civil and military programmes. GKN Aerospace is a major supplier of integrated composite structures, offers one of the most comprehensive capabilities in high performance metallics processing and is the world leading supplier of cockpit transparencies and passenger cabin windows. Background of thesis project In Aerospace the use of cost effective, fast and reliable methods for making parts is very important. Laser cutting is such method where it is possible to cut complicated shapes and to avoid subsequent machining that are both expensive and time consuming. To be able to use laser cutting on aerospace components, one must understand how the method impacts the materials and life of the part/product. Multiple factors influence the final outcome of the parts in laser cutting; cutting speed, nozzle distance, power, gas pressure, type of shielding gas, type of material, material thickness and heat treatment condition. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate and design a process window for the laser cutting in Inconel 718 sheet. Assignment description The aim of the thesis is to evaluate and design a process window for laser cutting in Inconel 718 sheet, with respect to structure, properties and processing, in order to identify potential parameter settings for further work. The work will be carried out at the Material & Process department at GKN Aerospace Engine Systems in Trollhättan. Introduction to materials requirements and targeted properties for specific jet engine components Literature review of Laser cutting process, with focus on the applicability to the selected components Define the factors for the Design Of Experiment (DOE) regarding laser cutting o Cutting parameters o Material thickness o Gases; Nitrogen, Argon, Oxygen o Heat treatment condition Define the responses for DOE for laser cutting o Surface condition o Evaluation Metallurgical condition o Surface hardness o Scanning Electron Microscope evaluation surfaces cut with Nitrogen, Argon and oxygen. Design of the test plan for the DOE Run and evaluate the DOE 10125 utg. 24 Target Create a process window Report the result Presentation of the results at GKN Trollhättan Propose parameters for further work Propose continued activities beyond the current project Informationen i detta dokument tillhör GKN Aerospace Sweden AB.
