CLASS TITLE:
DIRECTOR, COMMUNITY SERVICES AND BUSINESS
DEVELOPMENT
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Dean, Community Education, plan, develop, organize, and actively
promote the district’s Community Services and Business Development offerings; perform duties
related to policy development, budget management, course and instructor selection, public
relations, marketing and sales; supervision and evaluation of the performance of assigned
personnel.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Plan, develop, and organize fee-based training, classes, workshops, events, and
excursions. [E]
2.
Actively promote training for business and industry. Develop and produce marketing
materials for all offerings. Coordinate and supervise the production of the Community
Education Bulletin. [E]
3.
Participate in the formulation and development of program policies, procedures, goals and
objectives as a member of the Instructional Services team.
4.
Prepare and administer budgets; monitor, approve, and control expenditures in
accordance with district policies and state mandates regarding program self-sufficiency.
5.
Produce and maintain financial and statistical records and reports; forecast amounts
needed for staffing, equipment and supplies; authorize purchases and establish
appropriate fees and salaries for services, training, classes, workshops, and events;
negotiate contracts and maintain accounts receivable.
6.
Recruit, interview, select, hire, and evaluate instructional personnel; review and approve
course proposals and curriculum; review student evaluation surveys to determine
instructor effectiveness and student satisfaction. Assess program operations and
activities in terms of cost-effectiveness and program goals; review work methods,
products, procedures, and functions to assure efficiency and financial self-sufficiency. [E]
7.
Select, train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of office personnel; assure efficient
office operations and registration procedures. [E]
8.
Assist businesses in assessing needs; research, analyze, and interpret local demographic
and industry data and national and local trends to determine appropriate training,
services, course offerings and events. [E]
9.
Perform public relations duties by representing Community Services and Business
Development and the district in the community; develop and maintain positive customer
relations; investigate complaints and resolve problems.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural,
ethnic and disability issues.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree, evidence of entrepreneurial success, five
years demonstrated successful experience in business or industry, including at least one year
of work experience in a college or collegial environment.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Special Projects Coordinator, Community Service Assistant I and II
CONTACTS:
District staff, private employers in the community, and the general public.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and stooping; occasional light
lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; ability to travel to a variety of
locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships involving interactions and
communications personally, by phone and in writing with a variety of individuals and/or groups
of individuals from diverse backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to work effectively
under pressure on a variety of tasks concurrently while meeting established deadlines and
changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily business office environment; subject to frequent public contact and interruptions;
occasional exposure to angry, disgruntled and abusive individuals; usual assignment worked
during daylight hours with occasional evening, weekend and/or holiday hours required on an asneeded basis.
