Meeting Notes
September 21, 2011
Present: Martha Aaron, Kristi Adams, Maryann Cohan, Denise DiPasquale, Darling Garcia, Veronica Mendoza,
Philip Sutton, Alin Sanchez, Traci Traina, Maricela Vital, Alicia Zambrano
A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 pm at the Business
Training Center in Room 2.
Review of Minutes from August 25th meeting
Minutes approved as written.
Department Updates
o Grants – Kristi Adams:
1) Economic and Workforce Development Program grants were submitted September 8. There were
two Responsive Training Fund (RTF) grants, one submitted by CACT and another submitted by
CITD; one Industry Driven Regional Collaborative (IDRC) submitted by CITD; and one Job
Development Incentive Fund (JDIF) submitted by WpLRC. Waiting for notification.
2) ECC notified of award for the new (Hispanic Serving Institution) HSI STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, Mathematics) grant, which is a five year grant focusing on science, technology,
engineering, and math degrees, certificates and transfer-readiness, along with articulation
enhancements.
3) Preparing a FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Assistance to Firefighters grant
application. If awarded, the grant will be used to better prepare firefighters for training exercises by
providing equipment and personal protective gear for trainees.
4) Submitting another STEM related grant which will be a subcontract with UCLA CEED (Center for
Excellence in Engineering and Diversity) program.
5) NSF (National Science Foundation) Presidential Award – MESA application (nomination) $10,000.
6) Funding opportunity searches are still underway for the Sustainability efforts on campus, SBDC
Entrepreneurship Center and WIT (Women in Industry & Technology).
7) New comprehensive grant database features are still being tweaked to finish the reporting
functions.
o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Traci Traina/Darling Garcia:
1) Still working on grants.
2) Doing training for companies in the area.
3) NSF team was here to launch new website for the program. One feature is the ability to download
curriculum.
Alicia Zambrano:
UCLA robotics during the summer finished with 20 students. Compton classes are growing. The WIP
finished the summer Machinist and Aerospace training. IDRC Aerospace Fastener training provided to
26 students. California Math and Science (CAMS) registered 400 students. On completion of all
classes in PLTW (Project Lead The Way) engineering program, the student can get a certificate. CAA
(Career Advancement Academy) is new and is being held in both locations. Naomi Tokuda is heading
the project. There will be two cohorts at each campus. The website is in place. Outreach and
recruitment is on-going for all programs.
o Center International Trade Development – Maryann Cohan:
1) Waiting to hear about two grant applications. Working with multiple partners.
2) Maurice Kogon and Kerry Bonner will be attending ECO Expo Asia 2011 in Hong Kong on October
26-29th.

Community Education – Veronica Mendoza:
1) Reduced staff in Community Education due to budget restraints.
2) Fall catalog response is strong so far despite reduced circulation by almost 50,000 households due
to budget restraints. New professional development Veterinary Assistant Program is receiving a
strong response.
3) Winter/Spring 2012 catalog – entering classes into registration system. Fine tuning of new class
concept including Alcohol and Drug Counselor training program and Aqualillies synchronized
swimming workshop for all ages. Revamping/updating Medical Coding and Billing program for
standardized curriculum for all instructors. Updating Mother-Daughter Tea for an Ole twist this
year.
o Contract Education – Maricela Vital:
Development Dimensions International will conduct training at the BTC for instructors on October 4-6,
2011.
Employment Training Panel (ETP)
1) All training funds have been allocated for ET11-0204 contract.
2) Panel meeting for a new two-year ETP contract will be September 23rd. We are requesting
$749,850 in funds.
3) AB 118 Contract ($745,000): received certifications for City of Huntington Beach, Orange County
Sanitation District, City of San Bernardino, City of Santa Ana, City of Torrance and City of Whittier.
Training is expected to start in October.
Contract Education
1) City of Torrance will start their tenth round of Customer Service training on October 6th with two
cohorts. Classes are now four sessions versus five.
o Small Business Development Center:
2) Three new counselors have been brought on-board: Michael Grimshaw, Donald Stukes and William
Sorotsky.
o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Denise DiPasquale:
1) Met with RN Instructor Octavia Hyacinth in preparation for activity related to grant submission for
Medical Administrative Assistant.
2) Retested John Weitzel’s SURT grant students in Locating Information and Applied Math.
3) Prepared the I-Train paperwork in preparation for El Camino College to begin training students as
Industrial Technicians.
4) Attended the Executive Committee Meeting of the South Bay Workforce Investment Board.
5) Attended the installation of officers for the Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce.
6) Did research in preparation for the JDIF grant to the Chancellor’s Office that includes the Medical
Administrative Assistant Training Course.
Maryann Cohan
1) Terminal Island’s fiscal year ends September 30th. All classes are finishing up. New classes will
begin in January. Job Fair was very successful. Presenters included a solar company, veterans,
One Stop, Goodwill SC, EDD (Employment Development Department) and the Pile Drivers Union.
100 inmates attended. Metropolitan Detention Center’s Parenting class is on-going.
2) Maritime Training: Lifeboat class scheduled for October 18th. Standards for Training Certification
and Watch keeping (STCW) class scheduled for October 25th.
3) Personal Survival Technique Training is being provided to Disney Cruise Line until April 2012.
Discussion
o State Budget and College Budget: There will definitely be mid-year cuts and a reduction in
sessions.ABX132 was passed and will delay the tuition increase until summer.
