Meeting Notes

August 27, 2008

Present: Martha Aaron, Jose Anaya, Maryann Cohan, Espie Corrado, Darling Garcia,

Maricela Vital

A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at

10:00 a.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 2.

Review of Minutes from July 22, 2008 meeting o Minutes approved as submitted

Department Updates o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia: The High

School Globalization grant ends August 31 st . Year end report for CITD grant is being completed. The Nicaraguan delegates visit was a success. The individuals participating in the program were impressed with the level of training offered. The next delegation will be arriving October 19 th . This effort has been a way to introduce ourselves in Nicaragua and to help them adopt

Small Business Development Centers or Business Training Centers in their country. Through the CATLI grant, the CITD and the Workplace Learning

Resource Center have established a logistics institute and are offering a course to prepare for the U.S. Customs Broker Exam. Information regarding this course has been mailed to interested individuals. This course will be offered every Tuesday from 6:30-9:30 p.m. from September 23 – December 9, 2008.

Manufacturing Technology Certificate Program had 25 individuals complete their training this month. The Honeywell training will be completed in

October and the WIRED grant will end in November. o Contract Education & Community Education – Maricela Vital: State budget issues are affecting the Employment Training Panel allocation of funds.

The meeting to discuss the application for the new contract has been moved out to September. The new contract training will hopefully begin October 1 st .

An ETP visit to close out the ET07 contract occurs on September 24 th

. The

City of Redondo Beach’s first series of workshops completed. The second series is expected to begin the end of October. A booth will be reserved at the

Conference in Long Beach on October 6-8. CITD, CACT and the Small

Business Development Center will participate. The Student Services

Technician position in Community Education has been filled. o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: We are expecting referrals for the Maritime programs and the Computer Lab from the

One-Stops due to the recent layoffs at Boeing. The state budget is also affecting this area. In the Computer Lab there are currently 5 students.

Maritime training for Standards for Training Certification and Watch Keeping

(STCW) and Lifeboat are continuing as scheduled. For information regarding these classes, call 310-973-3147. Two new instructors have been hired. One to teach CPR and First Aid to the STCW classes and one to teach the Medical

Person-in-Charge class to be offered. Bids for Terminal Island and Victorville are being presented for new contracts. Terminal Island will be offering job training programs in simple mechanical repair, testing services and library methodologies. Under the California Transportation Logistics (CATLI) grant,

James Hoffman and Roberto Pandolfi attended the Pacific Ports Conference in

Stockton to introduce our services; an in-service presentation of high wind generator curriculum was made; and plans to attend the Solar Panel

Conference in December are being made. WpLRC is investigating job training in solar panel installation. o Workforce Development – Espie Corrado: El Camino Language Academy will have 57 new students this fall, 10 of them are returning students. Career

& Technical Education (CTE) is continuing work on the CTE catalog. They participated in the New Student Welcome Day. CTE and Women in

Technology (WIT) had a joint presentation in which 43 students attended with their parents. WIT’s Nissan grant is continuing this year. It will be providing tools kits for students in 6 difference programs. The awards are based on recommendations from instructors. WIT’s Open House is scheduled for

October 30 th . The All Campus Advisory Dinner is scheduled for November

12 th . o Small Business Development Center – LauraLee Garinger: Star Van

Buren will act as Interim Director for the SBDC beginning September 3 rd . The last training module for the Cal Trans (CCCP) grant will take place in

September. Citibank co-sponsorship includes two NxLevel orientations and

10-week NxLevel training courses which will take place in October 2008 and

January 2009. Starting in October, the Youth Entrepreneur Program (YEP) will hold a 4-6 week business academy at the Compton Center for 25 students

(ages 18-27). A 10-week NxLevel training course will be offered through the

Carson co-sponsorship October 2-December 11, 2008. Additional information on all offerings can be obtained at 310-973-3177.

Discussion o Board Agenda Items

Board Agenda Item Request cover sheets are in the process of being revised. o Contract Issues

Looking into company contracts for multiple training classes. o Streamlining Operations

Staff should look at on-going operations and identify opportunities to streamline or improve processes to help us work more efficiently.
