EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes October 20, 2011 Present: Martha Aaron, Kristi Adams, Maryann Cohan, Denise DiPasquale, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Veronica Mendoza, Alin Sanchez, Traci Traina A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 pm at the Business Training Center in Room 2. Review of Minutes from September 21st meeting Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o Grants – Kristi Adams: 1) Economic and Workforce Development Program grant awards were announced. There were two Responsive Training Fund (RTF) grants, one submitted by CACT and another submitted by CITD. Only CITD was awarded $234,730 for nine months until 6/30/12. 2) H-1B Technical Skills Job Training Grant (California IT & Advanced Manufacturing Career Pathways Project) was awarded by the DOL. CMTA (California Manufacturer Technology Association) is the fiscal agent. Total of $5M for advanced manufacturing and information technology, $2M to Community Advancement and $1M of that goes to partners. Project period runs 1/1/12 – 12/31/15. 3) STEM related grant which is a subcontract partnership with the UCLA CEED (Center for Excellence in Engineering and Diversity) program was submitted. Its internal name is STRIDES (Strategies to Transform, Retain and Increase Diversity in Engineering Schools) and is part of the NSF’s (National Science Foundation’s) “STEP” Program. If awarded ECC’s portion will be $200,000 over 5 years. Others partners include Santa Monica College and LA Valley College. 4) Worked on a concept paper which was submitted for a state recycling grant called “CalRecycle Beverage Container Recycling Grant Program”. Goal 1: Jump-start a visible, self-sustaining beverage container collection program on ECC’s campus. 5) The new HSI STEM five year grant focusing on science, technology, engineering and math degrees; certificates and transfer-readiness, along with articulation enhancements was board approved this week. 6) ECC awarded another grant as a sub recipient with Mount St. Mary’s College. The grant will look at Hispanic and low income students transferring in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field as well. 7) Still working on the project management and reporting functions of the grants database. 8) Attended ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute) Training Seminar focused on ARC GIS which is a Geographic Information System for using maps and geographic data. We now have software to create custom maps and are learning how to use it. 9) Will be attending an Education Grants workshop hosted by Congresswoman Linda Sanchez. It’s designed to provide technical assistance to school districts and community-based organizations. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Traci Traina: 1) Reviewing H-1B grant work plan. 2) Our NSF (National Science Foundation) grant website will be launched this week. The site will allow educational institutions from all over the country to access curriculum for classroom learning. 3) The Career Advancement Academy grant is underway and offering classes at both El Camino and Compton. The grant focus is to incorporate contextual learning into our curriculum. 4) Working with North Orange County Community College District on RTF to train incumbent workers and employees; and on JDIF to train unemployed and dislocated workers. We will outreach to 1275 in each grant working with partner colleges, WIBS, WorkSource Centers, One-Stop Centers, Veterans, CalWorks and EWDP Initiative Centers. 1 5) Career Technical Education – held 42 sections of engineering classes in high schools between Fall and Spring. 6) Provided the following training: WazWoper and Material Requirements Planning. Upcoming training includes: geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, Six Sigma Green Belt and CQE Certification Course. o Center International Trade Development – Maryann Cohan: 1) Received RTF (Responsive Training Fund) grant. 2) Maurice Kogon and Kerry Bonner attending ECO Expo Asia 2011 in Hong Kong on October 26-29th. Twenty-seven American companies were recruited. o Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: 1) Professional Development Classes registration update: Pharmacy Tech = 11, Medical Billing & Coding = 21 total between two sections (13 in new Saturday class), Clinical Medical = 5, Veterinary Assistant = 7, Personal Fitness Trainer = 5. 2) The new Proctoring Services that the Community Education department began managing as of last fall, generated over $7,000 in registration fees for 2010-2011 fiscal. The special proctoring corner with two designated desks and computers established in the Community Ed office has proved to be an important service. Winter/Spring 2010 catalog: Layout stage and awaiting final details on Alcohol and Drug Counselor training program, Mother-Daughter Tea and 1912 lecture series to be offered in association with Torrance Cultural Arts Center’s 2012 Works in Progress services celebrating the centennial of the city of Torrance and excursion to Braun Southwest Museum library and Autry Museum. 3) Co-presenting with Boston Reed College at CCCAOE (California Community College Association for Occupational Education) Conference on October 20th for the breakout session Leveraging the Budget Crisis in Your Favor Through Partnerships: Community Advancement in Allied Healthcare. o Small Business Development Center: 1) Busy reaching our yearly goals set by the Small Business Administration and Long Beach City College Lead Center. To date, we have met and exceeded seven of our eleven goals. 2) Two SBDC Advisors will be trained to instruct business owners on-line through a special grant program provided by Hewlett Packard Life. Hewlett Packard donated 30 computers for training. 3) Bronwen Madden and Samantha Sproson have been attending networking events sponsored by local Chambers of Commerce to get the word out to the beach cities about our programs. o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Denise DiPasquale: 1) Received test results back from Summer Utilities Training re-test and 21 of 24 students improved their scores on the three tests. Prepared new WorkKeys Certificates and letters for the improved students. 2) Reviewed “Introduction to Sustainability; Definitions, Principles and Concepts” in preparation to offer it to area high schools in our service area who have Environmental Academies. 3) Prepared a 46 question multiple choice, true/false and fill-in-the blank interactive quiz to accompany the Introduction to Sustainability, as well as researched and reviewed new photographs, charts and illustrations to update the document for high school students. 4) Attended the Executive Committee Meeting of the South Bay Workforce Investment Board. Maryann Cohan 1) Terminal Island’s new classes will begin in January. Metropolitan Detention Center’s Parenting classes on-going. Current contract ending December 1st. 2) Maritime Training: Tankerman class is scheduled for October 31st. Lifeboat class scheduled for November 7th. Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class scheduled for November 15th. 3) Personal Survival Technique Training is being provided to Disney Cruise Line until April 2012. Disney is looking into firefighting training in the future. Discussion o State Budget and College Budget: Anticipate mid-year cuts in January. o Grants: One more round of TAA grants will be available in January. Adjournment at 2:20 pm 2
