A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 pm at the Business
Training Center in Room 2.
Review of Minutes from May 9th meeting
Minutes approved as written.
Department Updates o Grants – Kristi Adams:
1) Currently working on an HRSA (U.S> Health Resources and Services Administration)
Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students Grant. It will support financially needy students enrolled in the Nursing program. If funded, students will receive scholarships to cover 50%-100% of their tuition and a cost of living stipend.
2) We have been getting the grants manager software ready to provide users access by next week.
Amplifund grants management software has built out new features that are now live and we have learned the new features.
3) Bobby and I finished working on a Student Mental Health Program grant competition through the
Chancellor’s Office and Foundation for Community Colleges. It was due May 18 th and included requests for things such as suicide prevention and awareness efforts, peer-to-peer activities, training for faculty, staff and students-all centered around improving student mental health at the
ECC main campus and at Compton. We were able to receive partnership support letters from
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) South Bay Chapter and the County of Los Angeles
DCFS (Department of Children and Family Services).
4) Bobby and I assisted Jose with the submission of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community
College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grants program in May, titled Manufacturing Matters to
California. ECC is serving as the lead applicant amongst a consortium which includes: Cerritos
College, College of the Canyons, College of the Sequoias, De Anza College, North Orange
County Community College District, Orange County Workforce Investment Board, San Diego City
College, Sierra College, United Auto Workers Labor Employment and Training Corporation, and the statewide Workplace Learning Resource Center. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Karen Hess:
1) The Start Program (STEM training and Robotics Technology) will be held July 9 th through August
2 nd . Thirty-two participants will be enrolled. We had a very good response from individuals that would like to attend. We will be offering this for the next five years. Machine Tool Technology class is full for the summer. Highlight: The Society of Manufacturing Engineers awarded 20 $1000 scholarships.
Traci Traina:
1) New Grants: 1) H-1B Grant: Meeting with Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Board next month to discuss recruitment and placement options. Training scheduled to start in the Fall.
2) Existing Grants: 1) NSF (National Science Foundation) team will be here June 27-29 to discuss the new Center Grant application. 2) North Orange RTF/JDIF/IDRC: Through the Aerospace
Fasteners Training program at the Compton Education Center, 15 students were placed in jobs at a local manufacturing companies after completing a 144-hour training program. RTF (Rapid
Training Fund): closing out after four years.
3) Training Status: Certified Quality Engineering (CQE) and Certified Software Quality Engineer
(CSQE) classes were conducted at the Northrop Grumman Facility in San Diego. They will take

the AQ Certification Exam on June 2 nd . Certified Quality Engineering (CQE) was completed on
May 26 th . Students will be taking the June 2 nd American Society of Quality (ASQ) Exam.
4) Conferences: ASEE (American Society for Engineering Education) Conference will be held in San
Antonio, Texas from June 10-13 th . The HI-TEC (High Impact Technology Exchange Conference)
Conference will be held in Denver, Colorado on June 23 rd -26 th . NSF (National Science
Foundation) Conference will be held in Washington, D.C. on October 24-26 th .
Alicia Zambrano:
Major projects we are working with are the WIP-High School Summer Program in Machine Tool
Technology, the Aerospace/Machining training for adults in the summer evening program and the
UCLA Robotics Summer Program. o Center International Trade Development – Maryann Cohan:
1) CA State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) Project: Bronwen Madden recruiting businesses to attend the Food Expo in Hong Kong August 16-20 th .
2) Kerry Bonner continues recruiting participants to promote their products/services at the CA
Cleantech Trade Mission to China (funded by STEP) on August 20 th o Community Education – Veronica Mendoza:
through September 2 nd .
1) Special Events: 1. The May 24 th Happy Birthday City of Torrance event that included lectures by
ECC History Professor Dr. Michael James Eula and birthday cake generously donated by
Torrance Bakery in celebration of the year 1912 to mark the centennial of the City of Torrance had over 100 people in attendance and was well received by community members as well as several credit-side students who attended. Special thanks to Professor Eula upon his retirement for his tremendous commitment to lifelong learning and for his deeply inspiring presentation at this event.
2. Continuing the celebration of the centennial of the city of Torrance, the 14 attendees of the
Museum Excursion event on Saturday, June 9 th , reported positive and appreciative feedback regarding their memorable educational experiences at two iconic Los Angeles museums--The
Southwest Museum of the Indian and The Autry Museum with special presentations specifically related to Jared Sydney Torrance and the year 1912 in Los Angeles.
2) Kid’s College 2012: Classroom locations still remain to be determined for middle school and high school classes. Final planning and preparations are in full force. Classes run Monday-Friday,
July 2 nd through August 10th.
3) Fall 2012 Catalog: Most classes have been entered into our registration system, with the exception of some 20 plus pending courses that require revisions or edits. We are aiming to begin the graphic design phase by the first week in July.
Alexis Estwick – Foster Care:
1) YESS (Youth Empowerment Strategies for Success): Major event held on Saturday, June 9 th , in collaboration with Long Beach. Mentor City was held for emerging adults (ages 17-21) and covered transportation, housing, nutrition and health. There were 45 volunteers. Students received passports to pass through Mentor City. This illustrated life experience that goes with Life
Skills class. The second AB12 workshop through the Foundation for California Community
Colleges will be held on June 30 th .
2) Foster and Kinship Care Education (FKCE): Finishing last class for the year. We collaborated with the Department of Family Services doing workshop for working with pubescent kids (10-11 year olds).
3) Model Approaches-Partnerships (PS MAPP) final module will complete June 30 th . Class started with 23 and is now at 13.
Center for Customized Training (CCT)
– Maricela Vital
Employment Training Panel (ETP)
1) ET11-0204 Two Year Contract: Training finished. In process of invoicing for all trainees that have reached

3) ET11-0806 AB-118 Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Contract: First
Responder Training courses are booked through June, July and August at College of the Desert,
ECC and Rio Hondo College. Alternative and Renewable Maintenance Training classes are booked to take place in June, July and August at Long Beach Community College and Rio Hondo

College. ECC Fire Academy will conduct the second class for first responders on June 22 nd .
Media coverage is expected by local television stations.
4) ET-12-0702 Two-Year Contract: In the process of submitting an application for a new contract.
Contract Education:
City of Torrance training continues with Development Dimensions International (DDI) training.
Core Customer Service training started session No. 42 today and will start session No. 43 on June
19 th . A third class is expected to take place in September.
Other Activity: We will participate in the Professional in Human Resources Association (PIHRA) conference in August which will take place in Anaheim. o Small Business Development Center – Laura Garinger:
1) Attended the 2012 Job Fair at the Harbor Occupational Center/Wilmington Skill Center in San
Pedro on June 7 th .
2) SBDC had 3-hour operation review conducted by the SBA on June 12 th and everything checked out. Our accreditation will be coming up in August 2012.
3) Bronwen Madden will teach a Small Business Development Center International Trade Training for all SBDC personnel on June 21 st . There will be a quiz afterward. This will help everyone understand the mechanics of international trade better.
4) Ted Shove, a new Economic Development Analyst hired by the City of El Segundo will be meeting with one of SBDC’s success story clients. El Segundo would like to bring more small businesses into the city and wants to work with us and our clients in order to build strong relationships with the small business community.
5) SBDC representative will be attending the Mock Job Fair at Terminal Island Prison on June 27 th . o Workplace Learning Resource Center – Denise DiPasquale:
1) Conducted WorkKeys Assessment Testing for the Career Advancement Academy.
2) Conducted 40-hour Blueprint for Workplace Success training for Gateways to Green Building grant trainees.
3) Attended the following events South Bay Workforce Investment Board Executive Committee
Meeting.
4) Attended Introduction to Sustainability Speaker’s Bureau presentations at Carson High School.
Maryann Cohan
1) Terminal Island: Classes currently in progress: Blueprint Reading, Machine Shop Math, and
AutoCad. Mock Job Fair set for June 27 th . Metropolitan Detention Center’s 3 rd Parenting class graduation took place.
2) Maritime Training Schedule: Lifeboat – this week and Tankerman – July 25 th .
3) Disney Cruise Line will be back for training in September.
4) Computer Lab in TA 104A is beginning to have classes. Working with Workforce Investment
Boards to bring in unemployed individuals for training.
Discussion o College Budget: The College is working on different scenarios depending on what happens in
November. If taxes don’t pass, will be bad for everyone. It all depends on voters. o Closing-Out Year: Information provided for year-end deadlines. o Division Picnic: Looking at late July or early August for a Division picnic, possibly in the same location at last year.
