EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes June 7, 2011 Present: Martha Aaron, Maryann Cohan, Denise DiPasquale, LauraLee Garinger, Karen Hess, Alin Sanchez, Traci Traina, Alicia Zambrano A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 pm at the Business Training Center in Room 2. Review of Minutes from April 8th meeting Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Karen Hess: 1) Articulation Day: 21 new agreements signed. Road Trip Nation Counselor’s Conference held. CAA Kickoff (Career Advancement Academy) was also held last week at El Camino College. Faculty Administrators, Counselors, along with Math, English, English as a Second Language and Career Technical Education (CTE) instructors were invited to attend. This project is geared to train young adults in four different CTE pathways, Aerospace Fastener Technology, Machine Tool Technology, Utilities, and Welding Technology. 2) A 15-minute video was made of recent CTE activities under our grants to showcase our students. 3) ECC now has a Robotics Club which competed in two competitions and placed 2nd and 3rd. 4) Workforce Innovation Project – High school students have signed up for summer class. They will receive tool kits and be NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) certified, if they pass. It is an accelerated eight week course beginning June 27th. Alicia Zambrano: 1) We have started an Industry Driven Regional Collaborative (IDRC) grant courses for adults for aerospace training and machining assessment for the Fastener Program. 2) Career Day was held on June 1st at the Compton Educational Center and was a great success. Students from the Fastener Program had a chance to meet with industry representatives who want to hire our students. Students were given an opportunity to hand out their resumes and interview for open positions. Some students received multiple job offers. 3) Working with Workforce Innovation Project and the Veterans. 4) UCLA is offering Robotics class and we will pay for the instructor. It will be offered in the summer. 5) Closing Spring semester for North Orange County Project Community College District. Two programs started with 30 students each. Students will receive a Certificate of Completion. 6) CAMS (California Math & Science High School Academy) classes are closing down. Three classes might be offered in the fall. 7) Outreach and marketing on-going. Traci Traina: 1) A 3-day Six Sigma Green Belt Training is scheduled to begin next week. 2) Still in the process of scheduling Electron Beam Welding, 2008 Electrical Code Update and TeamCenter and UG (engineering software program) for various companies in the area. 3) On-site Six Sigma Green Belt personal development class will be held for CAA (California Advancement Academy) grant team. 4) Currently have 13 grants. Waiting to hear about 5 more grants. o Center International Trade Development – Maryann Cohan: 1) Import/Export class will be held Wednesday, June 8th, at the BTC. 2) Kerry Bonner is at the China International Environmental Protection Exhibition and Conference (CIEPEC) being held from June 7th – June 10th in Beijing. 1 o o o o Small Business Development Center : 1) Received a Small Business Job Act Program grant will let us provide technical assistance to small business concerns seeking access to capital or credit; federal procurement opportunities; energy efficiency audits to reduce energy bills; opportunities to export products or provide services to foreign customers; adopting, making innovations in, and using broadband technologies. 2) Beginning in July 2011, we will be offering online advisory sessions. The first visit must be in person, after that the client and advisor can conduct online consulting sessions from the comfort of their office or home. Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: 1) Community Education Special Events & Excursions updates: a) Mother-Daughter Tea on Saturday, May 7, 2011, was a success – positive feedback from the mothers and daughters who attended. b) Nixon Library & Museum excursion on Saturday, May 14, 2011 was also a success – 26 paid enrollments. 2) Kid-s College financial status: Enrollments are down. To date Community Ed has generated almost half of the total fees collected during last year’s entire 2010 Kid’s College program. 3) Final Kid’s College Logistics: a) Kid’s College instructor orientations started this week and will continue through June 17th. b) Set up of Kid’s College lounge, drop-off/pickup/walkway area, etc. in progress. c) Temporary Kid’s College staff starts June 21st. d) Final prep of instructor packets. e) Final prep/collection of parent release forms. 4) Fall 2011 catalog cover design is complete. Classes have been submitted to the Board. Copy/layout first round to be submitted to designer next Wednesday. Contract Education – Maricela Vital: Employment Training Panel (ETP) 2) Training provided included Frontline Leadership, Lean Development, Supervisory, Vocational English as a Second Language for Advanced Manufacturing, and Customer Service. 3) The deadline for submitting application for AB 118 for the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technologies Program was rescheduled to June 24th. ECC will administer the grant. If awarded, the grant will run through December 2012. Contract Education 1) City of Torrance has completed their eighth round of Customer Service training. The instructor has provided the new training schedule for summer, consisting of three classes. 2) City of Torrance has submitted the second amendment to their contract which will extend it through December 31, 2012. Workplace Learning Resource Center – Maryann Cohan: 1) Maritime Training: Vessel Security Officer class scheduled for June 10-11th. Lifeboat class scheduled for June 14th. Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class scheduled for June 21st. Advanced Fire class scheduled for June 20th. Medical Provider training scheduled July 12-15th with new instructor, Larry Crawford, RN. 2) Had onsite inspection from the U.S. Coast Guard on May 25th which went very well. 3) Terminal Island classes: AutoCad starts June 14th. Machine Shop Math started May 16th. Welding started May 23rd. Parenting started May 17th. 4) LA Metro Detention Center Parenting classes on-going. 5) Computer Lab: 3 students remain in class until June 30th. Funded by South Bay Center for Counseling. Lab will close June 30th until computers are updated. Denise DiPasquale 1) Met with Marilyn Lyon of the South Bay Council of Governments for Leuzinger High School Sustainability classes to set up speakers and field trips for the students. 2) Completed student interviews for John Weitzel’s Summer Utilities Training Program. 3) Attended the second to last South Bay Center for Counseling’s School Readiness Conference in Carson representing the college. 4) Completed the Blueprint for Workplace Success training course for the U.S. Vets in Inglewood. 2 5) Wrote a Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. Vets and the Workplace Learning Resource Center for future work readiness training skills for the veterans at the Inglewood housing facility. 6) Attended South Bay Police and Fire Medal of Honor Award Luncheon. 7) Began work on updating a “Survey of Work Readiness Certificates” that was originally done in January of 2007 to determine if any changes or improvements have been done in these programs and how they affect the probability of entry level and incumbent workers to both obtain and retain gainful employment. Discussion o State Budget: May budget revise is better than expected for community colleges. El Camino eliminated furlough cuts and they are now negotiating health benefit costs. There will be a winter intersession. o Contingency Planning: We are pursuing every grant that fits within our mission. AB515 would enable us to offer credit classes for a fee. Adjournment at 2:30 pm 3
