EL CAMINO COLLEGE Community Advancement Division Council Meeting Notes May 9, 2012 Present: Martha Aaron, Kristi Adams, Jose Anaya, Maryann Cohan, Alexis Estwick, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Veronica Mendoza, Alin Sanchez, Traci Traina, Maricela Vital, Alicia Zambrano A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 pm at the Business Training Center in Room 2. Review of Minutes from March 15th meeting Minutes approved as written. Department Updates o o Grants – Kristi Adams: 1) Finished working on a U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant called the Fire Protection and Safety Grant which was due last Friday. 2) Amplifund grants management software has built out new features that are now live, so we are relearning the system. Another demo/training is scheduled this Thursday. We hope to be ready to give access and provide training in late May or June to all who manage grants. 3) The Grants Office hosted a Grant Project Directors Forum on Monday, April 30th. There were 27 guests. We had three speakers, Josie Chung from Accounting, Irene Graff from Institutional Research and Katie Gleason from the Foundation. Project directors shared information about their projects. Bobby and I briefly introduced Amplifund and clarified grants procedures at the college. Gave out a general Policies & Procedures for Grants Management manual. Currently working on a survey to send to the participants for feedback. 4) We are currently working on a Student Mental Health Program grant through the Chancellor’s Office and Foundation for Community Colleges. It is due May 18th and will include requests for things such as suicide prevention and awareness efforts, peer-to-peer activities and training centered around improving student mental health. Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Traci Traina: 1) New Grants: 1) H-1B Grant: defining work plan with partners. 2) TAA Grants: Working on two TAA (Trade Adjustment Act) grants due to the Department of Labor on May 24th: One - West LA (El Camino, College of the Canyons, Antelope College and Cerritos, Two – CACT (El Camino, College of the Canyons, Cerritos, De Anza, Irvine, North Orange County, San Diego City College and Sierra). 2) Existing Grants: 1) NSF (National Science Foundation) Grant: Meet bi-monthly. Working on updating Modules and discussing plans for submitting NSF Center Grant. The NSF team will host a booth at the Hi-Tech Conference in June. NSF evaluators will be presenting at a breakout session. A poster presentation will be hosted. 2) Career Technical Education: The transition has been going smoothly. The CTE III final Report and half yearly Interactive Report were submitted to the Chancellor’s Office, as well as the 1st Quarter CTE IV narrative. 3) North Orange: RTF (Rapid Training Fund): Currently doing training for Northrop Grumman Corp. in San Diego and remotely to other out-of-state facilities in the following disciplines: Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) 32-hour Course and Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE) 24-hour Course. JDIF (Job Development Incentive Fund): Compton Center is holding two Aerospace Fastener Classes that will end in June. A Job Fair has been planned for May 30th at the Compton Center, where students will meet with industry representatives who want to hire entry level skilled workers., 3) Training Status: Certified Quality Engineering (CQE) classes being held at the Business Training Center on Saturdays ending May 26th. 1 o o Alicia Zambrano: 4) Student On-going Support: Our student cohorts in both machining and welding are doing great. We are getting ready for our end of the semester Job Fair and graduating these students for the end of the year program. We have 24 students so far that will be completing our first year program. 5) Summer WIP (Workforce Innovation Partnership) Training: We are having our annual High School summer training again focusing on 11/12 graders. Currently we are recruiting from Lynwood, Firebaugh, Paramount, Compton, Dominguez and Centennial High Schools. Our goal is to have 20-30 students in both classes. We are offering Machine Tool Technology 101abcd and Machine Shop Calculations. Students will take classes for 8 weeks and receive college and high school credit, take the NIMS Certification, get a free tool kit and a graduation at the end of the semester. 6) Summer IDRC Training: Also preparing for our Summer IDRC Machining/Aerospace Fastener Training. This will be focused on adults and will be held in the evening. We will be offering Blue Print Reading and Machine Tool Technology/Aerospace Fastener trainings. 7) CAMS (California Math and Science High School Academy): Finished registration for spring semester. Currently offering 4 sessions with college credit at CAMS in areas of MTE 75, ETEC 14, 16, & 18. This is our last year working with CAMS due to budgetary constraints. Hope to work with CAMS in other ways to still get the students involved with both of our campuses. Center International Trade Development – Maryann Cohan: 1) Bronwen Madden working on CA State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) Project. There will be a Hong Kong Food Expo August 16-20th. 2) Kerry Bonner working on CA Cleantech Trade Mission to China (funded by STEP). They will visit various cities August 20th-Septempter 2nd to promote products/services. She is also working on the ECO Asia 2012 October 27-30th in Hong Kong. Businesses that can attend must be suppliers with 50% environmental products. Community Education – Veronica Mendoza: 1) Summer Catalog: Printed version has been distributed to households, libraries, etc. 2) Kid’s College 2012: 1. As a result of advertising push via print, online and social media outlets along with the catalog being on-line, we are starting to experience increased phone and foot traffic along with increased registrations. Flyers to district schools pending. 2. Logistics/Planning: Kid’s College drop-off/pick-up location and Kids College lounge for breaks & lunches for grades 1-5) confirmed; working with Dr. Arce’s office, division representatives, facilities and campus police to plan appropriately – experiencing difficulty with finding classrooms clumped together. 3. Staffing: Special summer Kid’s College staffers will start as early as May to assist with the increased registration load and detailed student/parent registration processing. 3) Upcoming Special Events and Excursions: a) Mother-Daughter Tea May 12th featuring celebrity Chef Lizette Lopez De Arriaga. b) Aqualillies Water Ballet Mini-show and Workshop May 19th featuring the Aqualillies water-ballet company who were just featured on Glee and in Vogue. c) Happy Birthday City of Torrance! May 24th celebrating 100 years – the year 1912 with film presentation featuring Michael George of the Torrance Historical Society and Museum, ECC adjunct English instructor Kathryn Hall and ECC History Professor Dr. Michael James Eula. 4) Summer Instructor Contracts: Prepping for the processing and fulfillment of the over 150 instructor/organization contracts scheduled for the summer 2012 Community Ed Session. 5) Fall 2012: Request for proposals having been sent out; starting data input for fall 2012 catalog. 6) Community Education planning to move to the Industry & Technology building after Nursing moves to the new building. Alexis Estwick – Foster Care: YESS (Youth Empowerment Strategies for Success) completed 4 modules. They started 5th module on Monday as part of budget augmentation. There are a total of four additional projects. There will be two AB12 workshops through the Foundation for California Community Colleges for putting on the event Mentor City which will highlight community resources that youth can engage. Model ApproachesPartnerships (PS MAPP) completed 3rd module. Fourth module May 19-June 30th. Last class of 27 graduated 17 individuals. We have received our PS-MAPP contract for next year. We will do New 2 o o Student Day orientation on May 17th for youth living in foster care to expose them to ECC services and campus before New Student Day in August. Finding out what data is needed from ITS for priority registration. Foster and Kinship Care Education (FKCE): Classes are progressing as planned. I am awaiting instructions about our move, which we were told must happen by June 30th. Center for Customized Training (CCT) – Maricela Vital Employment Training Panel (ETP) ET12-0143 Core Two Year Contract: Training continues. ET11-0806 AB-118 Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Technology Contract: First Responder Training courses booked through May, June, July and August at College of the Desert, ECC and Rio Hondo College. Alternative and Renewable Maintenance Training classes are booked in May and June at Long Beach Community College and Rio Hondo College. We have a membership with the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium to further promote our train-the trainer program. ECC Fire Academy will launch their First Responders Training on May 21st and 22nd. Contract Education: City of Torrance training has completed. Additional training will resume later. Other Activity: Eldon Davidson will attend the Alternative Clean Transportation/ACT Expo 2012 May 16-17 at the Long Beach Convention Center. Cerritos CCD will share exhibit space with us to further promote the AB118 program. Small Business Development Center – Laura Garinger: 1) SBDC audit conducted by Moss Adams April 30th through May 2nd. Waiting for final report. 2) Attending the 2012 Job Fair at the Harbor Occupational Center/Wilmington Skill Center in San Pedro on June 7th. We will have an outdoor table with flyers and information about our center. 3) Orientation classes for business start-ups are going well. The pre-client workshop educates the attendees on what research, knowledge and experience they should have for the business they are thinking of starting. 4) New QuickBooks Series started May 9th and will run through June 13th. Workplace Learning Resource Center – Denise DiPasquale: 1) Conducted two sessions of WorkKeys Assessment Testing for L.A. Job Corps. 2) Continuing with the U.S. Vets resume writing and interviewing classes. 3) Attended the following events: South Bay Workforce Investment Board Business and Econ Committee Meeting, Job Development meeting at U.S. Vets, South Bay WIB Executive Board of Director’s Meeting, Introduction to Sustainability presentations at Leuzinger and Carson High Schools. Maryann Cohan 1) Terminal Island: New Educational Director started this week. Classes currently in progress: Welding, AutoCad 5, Machine Shop Math, and Parenting. Blueprint Reading to begin May 23rd. Metropolitan Detention Center’s 3rd Parenting class in progress. 2) Maritime Training Schedule: Lifeboat – May 15th, Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class – May 22nd, Tankerman - May 29-June 2 and Medical Provider – June 4th. 3) Disney Cruise Line training May 11 and 12th. Discussion o Grants: There are Economic and Workforce Development short term grants are due July 30th. We are going after four possible grants. o End of Year Activities: Personal Services Agreements are being defined to better illustrate who should fall into this category. Individuals are to be hired to do only a few classes/events during the fiscal year. Retired ECC individuals who are Casuals will have other restrictions to take into consideration depending on whether they fall under STRS or PERS. Adjournment at 2:50 pm 3
