Meeting Notes

March 9, 2009

A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at

10:00 a.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 21.

Review of Minutes from February 9, 2009 meeting

Minutes approved as written.

Department Updates o Workplace Learning Resource Center

– Maryann Cohan:

Maritime Training Classes

1) The next Standard for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class will take place on March 24 th .

2) A special Medical Provider class will be held the same week.

Prisons

1) AutoCad, Welding and Parenting classes have been approved at Terminal

Island. The AutoCad class will start on March 23 rd . The Welding and

Parenting classes will start after the new instructors have been cleared.

2) The Parenting class at Metro Detention Center continues with instructor

Alexis Estwick. o Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia:

1) In response to a request from

Senator Gloria Romero’s office we are involved in SB747, which is potential legislation for pre-apprenticeship aerospace program to be piloted at El Camino College. ECC is to be the pilot site.

2) Aerospace structure training for the unemployed has been set up through

ProPath. o Center for International Trade Development – Darling Garcia:

1) Deliverables for 30 Nicaraguan companies are presently being closed out.

2) Sixty Youth Entrepreneurial Program (YEP) students attended the Los

Angeles Chamber of Commerce presentation in February. The Vice

President of Columbia spoke to the students. There will be a follow-up session with counselors so that they understand the opportunities available to the students. This program is nearing completion.

3) Banning High School students participated in the International Business and

Marketing Competition in Oakland.

4) Continue to introduce high schools to the International Business Practice firm

(IBPF) curriculum. Commitment was received from several schools including

Carson and Gardena.

o Small Business Development Center

– LauraLee Garinger:

1) The Youth Entrepreneurial Program (YEP) held the second workshop of the series on March 7 th .

2) Hired an additional contractor, Maria Becerra, to conduct counseling and training in the cities of Compton, Wilmington, and possibly San Pedro.

3) Star Van Buren will attend a mandatory California Small Business

Development Center Conference April 13 and 14 prior to attending the

CALED & CCCEWD Joint Conference April 15-17 in Monterey, CA. o Contract Education & Community Education – Maricela Vital:

Cristallea Byun will be attending the CALED and CCCEWD Joint 2009 Annual

Conference on April 15.

Employee Training Panel (ETP)

Six companies are in progress of training. Six companies will be starting training soon.

Contract Education

1) City of Redondo Beach is half-way through their ten, eight-hour module training which will continue through 07/30/09.

2) Tentative curriculum has been submitted to the City of Torrance for Customer

Service Training. o Workforce Development:

Diligently working on VTEA proposal for $1.2 million in funding for vocational program improvements.

Career Placement Services

1) Mini Green Job, Internship and Informational Fair, co-sponsored by the

Career Center, the ECC Environmental Club and Career Placement Services will be held March 19 th .

2) There are 31 job postings currently on the bulletin board. Tallies for

February: 30 new job postings, 14 new employers, and 351 students using

CPS services.

Career Technical Education

1) A group of individuals with the Young Furniture Associates (YFA) toured ECC campus on February 26 th . They are interested in partnering with ECC for internships. They are interested in matching students that are trained at ECC with jobs in the industry.

El Camino Language Academy

1) Orientation held on February 3 rd . Classes will start on February 9 th . Currently

40 students are enrolled.

Women in Industry and Technology/Career Technical Education

1) Met with Hill Street Studios to discuss creating a poster to promote all 13 WIT programs. Met with M Design on creating a 3-6 minute video to market WIT for outreach presentations and web streaming.

Discussion o Security: Two incidences (one at the Inglewood Center and one at the

Business Training Center) caused the hiring of police cadets for both locations. The BTC will have a cadet on the premises on Tuesday and

Thursday evenings. Each person’s office must be closed and locked when leaving for the day. o Budgets: Governor’s May revision to the budget may affect us. o Grants: There is money that will come through the federal government to the states to help train individuals. We hope to be working with the Pacific

Gateway Workforce Investment Network to provide training for the unemployed. o Purchasing Calendar deadlines. o 170 day limit: Check to make sure that any casual/non-cert will not exceed the 170 day working limit. o Safety Notices: Every individual is to read and sign the Safety Notices that o are issued from the Office of Safety and Health.
