1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is
used for advertisement of the position.)
The Specialist, Extended Studies Marketing, assists in the day-to-day operation of the Marketing
Department, establishes and maintains editorial and branding standards, coordinates project work
flow from concept through completion, and promotes the university’s reputation and institutional
brand. The Specialist works with and advises Extended Studies (EXS) program faculty and staff on all
marketing and promotional projects used to generate enrollments and income for EXS and the
University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), including preparation and editing of copy and content appropriate
to the university for brochures, fliers, advertisements, press releases, e-blasts and e-newsletters,
social and digital media, and the web. The incumbent supervises and trains a marketing student intern
working within the department. The Specialist, Marketing reports directly to the Director, Marketing
and acts on his/her behalf in his/her absence and as liaison with EXS clients, vendors, faculty, staff
and community constituents.

60% - Needs Assessment, Content Development and Preparation
 Meet with clients, assess communications needs, discuss options, research and strategize
solutions
 Initiate and manage editorial and conceptualization process for a variety of EXS programs and
clients; design and/or collaborate with graphic designers to complete projects successfully
 Create, edit, proof, and disseminate program information across all media
 Recommend and produce timely, effective local, regional and national media releases, public
service announcements, advertisements, printed pieces and web copy/content
 Manage dynamic web content, program copy and approval process for the division’s
enrollment management system
 Lead the division’s social media and digital presence and establish/maintain its institutional
“voice” to promote all EXS programs
20% - Scheduling/Project Forecasting
 Coordinate with internal/external clients and internal marketing staff to forecast and develop
production schedules and completion dates for marketing projects
 Initiate job and client follow-up to establish a project plan and ensure timely completion
 Propose and monitor production schedules for major projects and catalogs and work with
Director to oversee production timelines
20% - Internal/External Relations
 Coordinate with media, advertising representatives and outside vendors
 Serve on university-based committees as appropriate
 Serve as department representative on internal/external marketing efforts with other university
departments and community constituents

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Specialist performs with a significant level of collaborative autonomy and freedom to maintain the
standards of quality, be the editorial voice and style appropriate to an institution of higher education
for both written and graphic production; establish production timelines, and oversee content for all
printed and digital promotional pieces. As the department’s editor in chief, the position plans layouts
and determines catalog, web and brochure content and format, ensures deadlines are met, and
approves final product for print and/or web.
Impact:
The decisions and final products of the Specialist have a major impact on the effectiveness of EXS
units to attract and maintain students, and a major impact on the institutional reputation, image and
integrity of Extended Studies and the University.
