Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the university. (This section is used for advertisement of the position.) The Director, Capital Improvement Projects, is responsible for managing new renovation projects. The Director oversees the coordination of specific State Public Works Board Capital Improvement Program projects with campus departments. This position is responsible for coordinating utility services in addition to those included in the aforementioned Capital Improvement Program. The director is responsible for coordinating with the State Public Works Board, State Fire Marshal’s office and the City of Reno Fire Marshal on code related issues affecting university projects. The position reports to the Senior Director, Planning and Construction. 2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide enough detail to enable a person outside the department to understand the job (percentage first with heading and then bulleted information). 50% - New Construction Coordination Serves as the lead architect for the department Supervises university architectural and engineering staff in construction of capital improvement and deferred maintenance projects Plans all new campus construction and renovation projects to comply with university construction standards including historical building preservation, state-of-the-art research facilities and classroom/office complexes Coordinates new construction for State Public Works Board Capital Improvement Projects with university faculty and staff Coordinates campus utility services, automotive and pedestrian traffic patterns, and impact of new facilities on existing operations. 20% - Project Management Efforts Administration Serves as a project manager on all major multimillion dollar Capital Improvement Projects Directs project management efforts including architectural and engineering design, supervision and construction of campus major remodel projects, and new construction projects to support teaching and research activities Coordinates needs of faculty and staff related to facility utilization and improvement Communicates with deans, directors, university staff, local governing agencies and consultants, and state and local regulatory agencies Provides research and support for departmental planning presentations Communicates and maintains guidelines and procedures to support the functions of the department Recommends initiatives and changes to improve quality and services for the department within incumbent’s purview 15% - Operations and Maintenance Coordination Coordinates with Facilities Maintenance Services (FMS) for all new campus construction projects, including: historical building preservation, state-of-the-art research facilities, classroom/office complexes and equipment Ensures that materials and equipment are appropriate and comply with university design and construction standards Position Description – Director, Capital Improvement Projects Page 3 15% - Facilities Services Policies Development and Staff Supervision Assist in the development of Facilities Services policies for interaction with other regulatory agencies and assist in preparing Facilities Services campus standards 3. Engineering expertise provides economic and innovative solutions to a wide range of faculty and facility related problems. Quality system design and construction improves the educational environment. This position assumes responsibility for problems and deficiencies in new and old facility design, construction and operation. The incumbent consults with the Senior Director of Planning and Construction Services on significant master planning, project management, financial, or human resources issues. Impact: Inappropriate or ineffective decisions may cause minor set-back in finalizing a project a major delay in project completion, causing significant financial loss to the University, employee/worker injury, lack of classroom usage, and research contamination or unsafe structural facilities. 4.
