This week, we answered the question “Why do people
pass down stories over the years?” In the tale tall Stormalong,
students read about how sailors in Cape Cod helped a very
unusual sailor. Students also read a folktale Hoderi, the
Fisherman, about a fisherman who tries to help his brother
catch fish. *This week’s stories and skills will carry into next
week.*
This week’s…

We spent a lot of time this week working
on multiplying multi-digit numbers by 1-digit
numbers. The students worked on expanding the
numbers and using the partial-products method
to solve their multiplication problems. Estimation
was also reviewed when solving the
multiplication problems. The students will bring
home their mid-chapter quizzes next week to be
signed by a parent or guardian.

With a focus on the shape of Pennsylvania, we drew
a map of Pennsylvania this week and also reviewed the
bordering states of Pennsylvania, as well! Another goal for the
week was to highlight the variety of landforms and
waterways. The students had an opportunity to work with
partners to use the content area text to design their own web
showing these major landforms. The overall goal is to continue
to give the students opportunities to understand and work
with text structure in order to improve comprehension and be
able to pick out main ideas and details.
* All social studies classes will have a chapter 1
social studies test on Thursday, October 29th.
