In Chapter 7 we began adding and subtracting fractions. We are using our knowledge of finding common denominators to show that we must refer to parts of the same whole before we are able to add or subtract fractions. Blocks 1 and 4: We continued to work with common denominators and simplifying fractions in preparation for our Chapter 6 assessments. We practiced finding equivalent fractions by finding common multiples and using tables to solve fraction word problems. We continued to focus on text structure to support students in learning how to use their resources to back up their thoughts or answers to important questions. Some of our other goals this week included being able to explain how the earliest animals and people arrived in our land, as well as how to identify and explain material artifacts important in our history. We also focused on the new vocabulary, where the students had to be able to define new words and apply the definition and be able to write a good fourth grade sentence to show that they understood the meanings. Did you know that a hard-shelled, flat creature, called a Trilobite, once lived on these lands we call Pennsylvania? Do you know the difference between an artifact and a fossil, or between a paleontologist and archaeologist? I bet if you asked a fourth grader, they would know these fun facts! Finally, we can now explain why the Native Americans may have settled in this area, and what some of their contributions to Pennsylvania History are!
