4th Grade News October 16, 2015 Upcoming Events H & S Shoe Drive 10/19/15-10/23/15 Spirit Day- Team Tuesday Tuesday- 10/20/15 Spirit Day- Western Wednesday Wednesday- 10/21/15 English Language Arts By: Miss Vilsmeier & Houghton Mifflin This week, we answered the question “Why might people raise money for a cause?” In the play The Power of W.O.W.!, students read about a group of children who helped raise money for a worthy cause. Students also read the informational text The Kid’s Guide to Money, about how to use a budget to manage money. This week’s… Target Vocabulary: assist, burglaries, innocent, scheme, regretfully, misjudge, suspect, favor, speculated, prior Vocabulary Strategy: prefixes non-, mis- (prefixes mean “not” or “badly”) Comprehension Skill: Theme- examine the character’s qualities and motives to recognize the theme of the play Comprehension Strategy: Analyze/evaluate-ask questions to analyze and evaluate the text’s meaning Writing: Narrative Writing- prewrite: fictional narrative Check out Think Central (online) to view the eBook and listen to this week’s selection. The students used graph paper and base ten blocks to draw out their multiplication problems. By: Mrs. Lahneman This week we finished up the science unit with our end of unit test, as well as cleaning up our plants stations. The students were excited to get a chance to bring home their plants to show off their planting expertise. We then began Social Studies this week with the location of Pennsylvania in the world, starting with what hemisphere, what continent, and where exactly in the U.S.! Our focus will be on helping the students learn how to use directionality in both their writing and their speech when describing where things are located. We also discussed what states border the state of Pennsylvania. We also focused on the Reading Target Skills of Main Idea and Details as we read through pages of lesson one.
