Alancraig’s pilot of entering assessment data to make sure it works for a program and not just a course.
1. Program Plan Prioritization
Laurel will be setting aside funds for one-time purchases. Dennis went through the goals and recommendations from the program plans and asked for clarification of needs. Some requests were deleted and some were amended. The revised list will be brought back to the October meeting for review and prioritization.
2. Accreditation
The Accreditation team will be on campus October 14-17. During this time, everyone must leave their calendars as open as possible for interviews with the team. If a request for an appointment is made, make that request a priority.
Dennis reminded everyone to be aware of the recommendations from 2007 and how we’ve satisfied them, especially the Student Services ones. Know where your program plans can be found and re-familiarize yourself with them.
Rachel mentioned the two-year rule, which is a mandate requiring a two-year deadline on correction of all recommendations that relate to deficiencies.
Student
Services satisfied that rule since program plans were implemented within that time, even though recently all program plans were updated and revised to meet new criteria. Rachel will send the “top ten things to know regarding accreditation” document along with the open forum dates and times.
3. Program/Department Updates
Tama:
• ES has been a “whirlwind of chaos” this semester. Many instructors have not turned in census rosters, which holds up reports and financial aid awards. It was suggested faculty be informed of the consequences to students when they don’t turn in rosters or grades on time.
• A&R is finally fully staffed and they are glad to have Ed on board.
Tootie:
• FAO is short staffed; final interview of a FA Advisor this week.
• First phase of Bldg. 100 remodel nearly done.
• Tootie’s been busy with state and federal reports.
Lyn:
• Even busier with short first week and reduced contract.
Katie:
• Flu shots have arrived; cost is $12.
• Welcome Home Vets training scheduled for November 22 from 8-12 at the horticulture center; please register as there is a minimum number of participants required.
• Peers team: students are trained as peer counselors to support other students with stress, grief, substance abuse, and navigating college.
• SHS is Certified Enrollment Assistor for the California Care Act where students can sign up for health care coverage.
• Health Fair will be October 3 in the Quad.
• SHS is starting a NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) chapter.
• SHS will sponsor a wellness challenge in the spring for the entire college.
Karen:
• Karen attended a Meeting of the Minds conference in Monterey.
• There’s a new flowchart of ed plans focusing less on career plans and more on degree plans – obtaining both simultaneously.
• WIA: 19 carryover students; no new students until October.
• CalWorks: 105 students and number will increase.
• Karen will be attending the new director training in Sacramento.
David:
• David has completed last year’s EOPS/CARE report; 96 students received book vouchers; cap was 197 but 240 students were served.
• There are 50 active students this semester who have had appointments.
• A video for EOPS orientation is an upcoming project.
2
Beth:
• More students are accessing services earlier than before.
• LS and DSPS are actively merging and will be examining service overlaps.
• They had a large turnout at their flex activity; there is a great need to educate faculty on how to support DSPS students.
• For anyone unsure of how to ask a student if they need DSPS referral, here’s a suggestion: “Have you ever received educational support services in your past?”
• Beth has been working with the math department on designing a new workshop for faculty and students.
• DSPS is taking suggestions for a new name with less stigma attached.
• Beth is also going to the new director workshop.
Rachel:
• This is the last year of Title 5 cohorts.
• Watsonville will have LS testing on Fridays.
• Learning Communities Center is located in room 501; Eric Grabiel is the director.
Barbara Rigg:
• Barbara’s on vacation next week.
Laura:
• Laura survived “the trenches” the first two weeks of school.
• Borrow a Book program is done for the semester; $20,000 was spent on new books.
Sandi:
• Kudos to everyone who volunteered at a Welcome Table.
• Emergency loan funds depleted until loans are repaid so no more loans for a while.
Dennis:
• Veterans Services Committee will start up again; fewer members this time; will focus on the 8 keys of success.
• Foster Youth have temporary space in the front office of room 1006 below the library; target move-in date is October 1.
