COD Celebrates 46th Annual Commencement
Nearly 500 students proudly walked the stage to
accept their diplomas at the College of DuPage
46th Annual Commencement Ceremony on
Friday, May 20. Held at Benedictine University’s
Rice Center while the College’s PE Arena is under
construction, the students enjoyed an evening of
congratulations and words of wisdom from fellow

COD 2013 Outstanding Graduates
Alexis Reisch of Bolingbrook and Meghan
Thome of Naperville are the 2013 Outstanding
Graduates at College of DuPage. A graduate of
Lyons Township High School, Reisch (right)
earned an Associate in Science degree and is
transferring to the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Thome (left) is a former educator who returned
to school and earned an Associate in Applied

For their exceptional work with students, Christopher
Johnston of Carol Stream (left) and Paul Sirvatka of
Glen Ellyn have been named College of DuPage’s
Outstanding Advisors for the 2012-2013 academic
year. ”Ultimately what I do is help students develop a
vocabulary that allows them to clearly articulate their
goals and make the best possible decisions for
themselves,” Johnston said. Sirvatka added: “It is from
understanding their strengths and weaknesses, their
struggles, their dreams and the things that matter to
them that I am best able to help them with their school

Celebration of Academic Excellence
Brooke Cheser of Roselle is recognized as a Presidential
Scholar by Honors Program Director Helen Feng during
the recent “Celebration of Academic Excellence” that
recognized the 2012-2013 Honors and Presidential
Scholars. “It’s a celebration of accomplishment, of
perseverance and of true commitment to excellence
both in and outside the classroom,” she said. Click here

Expand Your Horizons as a Social Host this Summer!
Kudos to… the College’s 18 faculty members who
have been recognized as the 2012-2013 Outstanding
Divisional Faculty Members at College of DuPage.
The faculty members were selected for their excellence in
teaching, service to the College, scholarly activities,
community service and advising skills. Each will receive a
monetary award from the College of DuPage Foundation.

Kudos to…COD Librarian Mary
Konkel, who has been elected as a
delegate to the Online Computer
Library Center Global Council. The
OCLC Global Council supports the
OCLC mission of “furthering access
to the world’s information and
reducing the rate of rise of library
costs” by serving as a key link
between member libraries and OCLC
management, thus facilitating
communication and responding to
expressed concerns from Global
Council members, general library
members, and others to help shape future directions of the
organization. Konkel’s three-year term begins in July. She will
represent the Americas Regional Council, which includes
delegates from Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean and the
United States.
More Kudos to…Branch Manager Amy Elliott and the team
at U.S. Bank. who have formed banking relationships with
several hundred students, faculty and staff at the new branch
since its opening on March 25. The full –service branch is open 8
a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays throughout the summer.

And More Kudos to…English faculty Mardelle Fortier, who
has just had a poetry book published by Finishing Line Press. The
book, WHITE FIRE, celebrates figure skating and several of its
poems have won awards across the U.S. This book is now
available in the COD bookstore, or at
www.finishinglinepress.com.

In July, COD will welcome 16 new international students to
campus through the Community College Initiative Program
(CCIP.) This U.S. State Department program brings students
to community colleges to develop leadership, professional
skills and English language proficiency. Our students will
study applied engineering, interior design, business and early
childhood education. They will participate in community
service, internships and cultural enrichment activities. This
year’s students who arrive in mid-July are from India,
Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey, Egypt, South Africa, Cote d-Ivoire
and Ghana. This summer, be part of the adventure by
becoming a social host! Social hosts are asked to commit to
one or two days of contact with the student each month. This
might include a home-cooked meal, a local outing or an
invitation to a holiday or family celebration. For more info,

GED Graduation is Tomorrow!
Come by to celebrate the triumphs of this year’s GED graduates
set for noon tomorrow, May 18, in SRC 2000!
Age-Well DuPage is this Sunday, May 19
COD's Continuing Education department has partnered with
DuPage County Senior Services to host "Age Well DuPage:
Renew; Recharge; Reinvent" from 1 to 4 p.m., on Sunday,
May 19, in SRC 2000. During this free event, cosponsored by
Walgreens and WDCB, attendees will learn about resources and
services of interest to adults 50 years of age and older in DuPage
County. This event is designed to celebrate reinvention and to
guide participants in aging and living well and making the most
