June 12, 2014 Proud Families Gather to Celebrate GED Grads More than 200 family members and friends gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of 77 Adult Basic Education/ General Education Development graduates who received their certificates at a ceremony last month. Breuder praised students for their determination and commitment to education, encouraging them to take their educational aspirations even further. As a community college graduate and president for nearly 34 years, Dr. Breuder credits the opportunity of this educational system for both his career and personal success. “We couldn’t be prouder of your accomplishments,” he said. “Today is not the end. Know that you have family and friends here to help you achieve the success that you – yourself – define.” Read More ‘Rolling on the River’ Event for Veterans COD Coordinator of Field Studies and Training Gib Egge recently helped to organize a paddling excursion for veterans. More than 100 veterans and volunteers attended the event, which included basic canoeing and kayaking instruction before the troops hit the water and paddled a six-mile stretch of the Fox River. The veterans were treated to a steak lunch to fuel up before facing the Marge Cline Whitewater Course in Yorkville. Kudos also to Veterans Services Coordinator Shelly Mencacci who spread the word about this inaugural event. Support for ‘Super Owen!’ College of DuPage employees gathered in support of Christina Payton’s son, Owen, who recently underwent a successful heart transplant surgery. Owen’s school buddies (below) also rallied in support of his speedy recovery. Horticulture Hosts Gardening Study School The COD Greenhouse Manager Amy Hull, Greenhouse Grower Marty Bartz and Horticulture students provided a daylong gardening gathering last month for members of the Garden Clubs of Illinois. The program included an hour-long tour of the College’s greenhouse and landscape lab, as well as a presentation by Professor Judy Burgholzer on Plant Propagation. Participants also enjoyed a hands-on activity (pictured) that included propagation practices through cuttings, special structures, division, layering and seeding. Burgholzer also presented a session on Houseplant Basics, which included a display of insect pests put together by College of DuPage students. The event culminated with an exam for Garden Club members seeking certification. This new 10week course will result in the students becoming certified as polygraph examiners. The course includes 400 hours of instruction provided by the Academy of Polygraph Science .The program is accredited by the American Polygraph Association (APA), and recognized by the American Association of Police Polygraphists (AAPP), the National Polygraph Association (NPA), and virtually all national, International, regional, and state polygraph associations. The current students are scheduled to graduate on Aug. 8, 2014. More Kudos to…students in the Fashion Design program who created some beautiful designs for this spring’s Fashion Show. Vivian Maier Exhibit at the Cleve Carney Gallery The MAC’s Cleve Carney Art Gallery will host a unique exhibit of photographer Vivian Maier's work entitled "Vivian Maier: Exposed" from June 17 to Aug. 16. A free opening preview reception is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. It will include a meet and greet with members of "Team Vivian," a College of DuPage team, including vintage film processor Frank Jackowiak and several film and photography students who processed Maier's film.
