Jan. 17, 2014 Chaparral Fitness Center Hosts Open House Jan. 22 College of DuPage employees received a sneak peek this week of the $24 million project that renovated 83,000 square feet of the existing 134,000 square-foot Physical Education Center. The complex includes a new fitness center for students, staff and community members, a strength complex, aerobic machines, new locker rooms, an indoor track, a competition-length pool and a 40,000 square-foot arena for COD and community athletics and other events. In addition, a new 14,000 square-foot separate wing contains new facilities for Varsity Athletics at the College. The College will host a Student and Staff Open House on Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include tours of the state-of-the-art complex, a chance to test out the new equipment, raffle prizes, music, food and free t-shirts to the first 100 students to sign up for Chaparral Fitness memberships. Dan Bindert New WDCB Station Manager Radio veteran Dan Bindert has settled in as the new station manager at WDCB 90.9 FM Public Radio from College of DuPage. Bindert, who began in late October, previously served as vice president of radio operations at Lakeshore Public media’s WLPR in Merrillville, Ind., where he hosted jazz and blues programs and produced an anchored newscasts, “Weekend Edition” and features for “Eight Forty-Eight” at WBEZ. “I am looking forward to the leading WDCB. The station is an important part of the Chicago jazz landscape and people recognize the quality work we do,” he said. “We’ve already expanded our jazz programming by an hour a day, and that’s gotten great reception from our listeners.” The station also recently had its first remote broadcast from Pianoforte in Chicago, something Bindert said he wants to do regularly. Read More Second Annual Career Fair Saturday, Feb. 8 College of DuPage will host its second annual Career Fair, sponsored by the Chicago Tribune, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, in SRC 2000. During the fair, attendees will have the opportunity to meet with recruiters from more than 65 local employers and discuss job opportunities. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about educational opportunities offered by COD that can provide them with an edge in a competitive job market. Employees enjoyed a sneak peek at the completely renovated McAninch Arts Center this week. The 14-month, $35 million project revamped three performance stages, including the Playhouse and Studio Theatres and the 800-seat Performance Hall. In addition, the project included construction of a new Box Office and 2,700 square-foot addition Cleve Carney Art Galley addition for modern art, as well as renovations to the Gahlberg Gallery. Academic spaces were upgraded for drawing, painting and printmaking, the graphic design studios, the Motion Picture/TV, video and photography spaces. COD Offers New Culinology® and Food Science Degree COD is offering a new Culinology® and Food Science degree program that prepares students for occupations in food product development, food research, food manufacturing, food processing inspection and flavor development. “This degree will help students obtain entry-level research and development or similar positions at companies that manufacture food products,” said Tim Meyers, Associate Professor of Culinary Arts. Toys for Tots Kudos Update…The College collected an additional 50 toys after the deadline – resulting in a total of 1,072 items donated to local youth and teens this season. Interviewers Still Needed for Student Leadership Academy More than 170 students from all over DuPage County will participate in this year’s Leadership Academy. A few volunteers are still needed to assist with the interview skills portion of this program on Friday, Feb. 7, at Lewis University, 1111 W. 22nd St., Suite 700, Oak Brook. The interview training takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with an optional lunch afterward. The TLC will supply volunteers with a list of questions as well as a student feedback form.
