Chaparral Fitness Center Hosts Open House Jan. 22
College of DuPage employees received a sneak peek
this week of the $24 million project that renovated 83,000
square feet of the existing 134,000 square-foot Physical
Education Center. Click here for photos from the sneak
peek. The complex includes a new fitness center for
students, staff and community members, a strength
complex, aerobic machines, new locker rooms, an indoor
track, a competition-length pool and a 40,000 square-foot
arena for COD and community athletics and other events.
In addition, a new 14,000 square-foot separate wing
contains new facilities for Varsity Athletics at the College.
The College will host a Student and Staff Open House
on Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The
event will include tours of the state-of-the-art complex, a
chance to test out the new equipment, raffle prizes,
music, food and free t-shirts to the first 100 students to
sign up for Chaparral Fitness memberships.
Dan Bindert New WDCB
Station Manager
Radio veteran Dan Bindert
has settled in as the new
station manager at WDCB
90.9 FM Public Radio from
College of DuPage.
Bindert, who began in late
October, previously served
as vice president of radio
operations at Lakeshore Public media’s WLPR in Merrillville,
Ind., where he hosted jazz and blues programs and produced
an anchored newscasts, “Weekend Edition” and features for
“Eight Forty-Eight” at WBEZ. “I am looking forward to the
leading WDCB. The station is an important part of the
Chicago jazz landscape and people recognize the quality work
we do,” he said. “We’ve already expanded our jazz
programming by an hour a day, and that’s gotten great
reception from our listeners.” The station also recently had its
first remote broadcast from Pianoforte in Chicago, something
Bindert said he wants to do regularly. Click here for a recent

Second Annual Career
Fair Saturday, Feb. 8
College of DuPage will
host its second annual
Career Fair, sponsored by
the Chicago Tribune, from
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on
Saturday, Feb. 8, in SRC
2000. During the fair,
attendees will have the opportunity to meet with recruiters from
more than 65 local employers and discuss job opportunities. In
addition, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about
educational opportunities offered by COD that can provide them
with an edge in a competitive job market. Free workshops are
scheduled the week prior to the event to prepare attendees to get

The MAC is Back!
Employees enjoyed a sneak peek at the completely renovated
McAninch Arts Center this week. The 14-month, $35 million
project revamped three performance stages, including the
Playhouse and Studio Theatres and the 800-seat Performance
Hall. In addition, the project included construction of a new
Box Office and 2,700 square-foot addition Cleve Carney Art
Galley addition for modern art, as well as renovations to the
Gahlberg Gallery. Academic spaces were upgraded for
drawing, painting and printmaking, the graphic design studios,
the Motion Picture/TV, video and photography spaces. In
addition, a new canopied Patio Stage is located just south of

COD Offers New Culinology® and Food Science Degree
COD is offering a new Culinology® and Food Science degree
program that prepares students for occupations in food product
development, food research, food manufacturing, food
processing inspection and flavor development. “This degree will
help students obtain entry-level research and development or
similar positions at companies that manufacture food products,”
said Tim Meyers, Associate Professor of Culinary Arts.

Kudos to…the Multimedia Services team. Since starting
the You Tube page in 2008, Multimedia Services has had a
total of 1,080,477 views, 628 subscribers (and growing!),
and the page has 590 videos uploaded. Check it out at

Toys for Tots Kudos
Update…The College
collected an additional
50 toys after the deadline –
resulting in a total of 1,072
items donated to local youth
and teens this season.
COD is one of the largest
collection sites in DuPage!
More Kudos to…Vice President of Student Affairs Earl
Dowling, who was featured last month in the cover story for
the Sun-Times’ Education Guide, “Reducing Transfer
Tension.” In addition, Dowling recently presented at the
annual Strategic Enrollment Management conference held in
Chicago.
More Kudos to…students Danielle Repika, Nathan Reid,
Sara Liesman and Chris Danielson were named Public
Anthropology Award Winners. Students in Anthropology
Professor Michael Dietz’s Cultural Anthropology classes
participated in a North American competition involving more

More Kudos to…Art Professor Kathy Kamal, whose
presentation last month to more than 180 members of the
Glen Ellyn Wheaton Community Associates of the Art Institute

Mark Collins, who presented “Innovative Teaching
Strategies: Can the Methods Used by Corporate University
Trainers for Training Inform the Teaching Practice of College
Professors?” at the recent American Association of Adjunct
Education conference.
More Kudos to…faculty member Steven W. Fry, who was
recently recognized by McGraw-Hill Publishers for his
contribution to the publisher’s 10th edition of “Teachers,
Schools and Society,” an introduction to education
coursework textbook.
More Kudos…to the team at Waterleaf restaurant…the fine
dining establishment was featured in a foodie blog, “You,
Your Body & Your Health,” which referred to the restaurant
as “the perfect restaurant for the nutritionally conscious
foodie.”
Even More Kudos…to Latino Center Coordinator Saraliz
Jimenez, who received a letter of thanks from Jacob
T. Engler, Principal of Reskin Elementary School,for her
team’s assistance with translators for the school’s recent
Reskin Elementary’s Parent/Teacher conferences. He wrote:
“The COD students were personable, professional and
prompt. Our Reskin parents and staff were very appreciative
to have COD students assisting them and were very
complimentary of their services.” Special kudos to students

Global Education Initiatives
The Global Education Advisory Committee has
announced the second deadlines for “Funding
Global Education Initiatives: On-Campus and
Abroad” for academic year 2013-2014. These
funds are designed to enhance the global
education of our campus community. Please
submit an application by Friday, Jan. 31, for
spring semester initiatives to the Field and Experiential
Learning/Global Education/Study Abroad office, BIC 3509.
Interviewers Still Needed for Student Leadership Academy
More than 170 students from all over DuPage County will
participate in this year’s Leadership Academy. A few volunteers are
still needed to assist with the interview skills portion of this program
on Friday, Feb. 7, at Lewis University, 1111 W. 22nd St., Suite 700,
Oak Brook. The interview training takes place from 8:30 a.m. to
11:30 a.m., with an optional lunch afterward. The TLC will supply
volunteers with a list of questions as well as a student feedback

Scholars Awards Applications Now Being Accepted
Applications are now being accepted for the 2014-2015 College of
DuPage Scholars Awards. This year’s submissions deadline is
Friday, Feb. 28.”The popularity of these Scholars Awards
continues to grow,” said Julie Marlatt, Coordinator of Admissions
and Outreach at College of DuPage. “It’s a reflection on both the
academically strong students throughout District 502 and the
quality education they want to receive at College of DuPage.”
