2 1 Scarlet and Gray Newsletter January 25th to 29th, 2016 Volume 19, Issue 21 N Monday Tuesday Our math starter today was a snowman dot-to-dot. We then greeted our friends. We said the pledge and our class promise and did calendar. We did our ABC charts and sang our vowel song. We sang our Days and Months songs, subitized and read our popcorn words. We reviewed the habits of thinkers. Our kindergartner of the Week shared his/her poster and we wrote a sentence about him/her using interactive writing. We learned our new popcorn word ‘it’ and did rainbow writing of it. We learned that good readers and writers set goals to improve. We were introduced to our poem of the week, ‘Winter’. We graphed whether we have ever made a snowman. We read three parts of a nonfiction book, Snow. We did shared reading. We made paper snowmen. We had recess!! We figured out our mystery number and determined which had more or less on two ten frames. We did dice math. Our math starter today was to identify which group had less. We then greeted our friends. We said the pledge and our class promise and did calendar. We counted to 100 by fives and tens and read our popcorn words. We did our ABC charts with blends. We reviewed the habits of thinkers. Our kindergartner of the week brought something for social studies and we wrote a sentence about him/her using interactive writing. We did speedwriting of our popcorn words. Our clothes pin graph was ‘did you bring gloves or mittens today?’. We predicted which colored ice block would melt first and then observed to see if we were right. We did shared reading and read The Mitten. Then we used pictures from the book to retell the story from the beginning to the end. We wrote a story about the snowman that we made yesterday. We figured out our mystery number. We played a math game called ‘What’s the Missing Number? with partners. Our math starter was a quick count and write the number activity. We then greeted one another, said the pledge and our class promise and did calendar. We counted to 100 by fives and tens and read our popcorn words. We reviewed the six habits of thinkers. We did ‘Action Alphabet’. Our kindergartner of the week brought items for us to estimate and we wrote a sentence about him/her using interactive writing. We did speedwriting of our popcorn word. We read Maggie and the Pirate by Ezra Jack Keats. The AM class had library. The PM class examined the snowman story that they wrote on Tuesday to determine their first writing goal. We sequenced the lines of our poem. We graphed whether we like snow. We did shared reading and read There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow! We found our mystery number and played ‘Roll and Cover’ math where we raced to fill ten frames. We greeted classmates. We said the pledge and our class promise and did calendar. We counted backwards from 20, subitized ten frames and read our popcorn words. W e reviewed the habits of thinkers. Our kindergartner of the week shared something for Social Studies and we wrote our final sentence about him/her using interactive writing. We kept our personal writing goal in mind as we wrote independently about our kindergartner of the week. The AM class examined the snowman story that they wrote on Tuesday to determine their first writing goal. The PM class had library. We read, highlighted the popcorn word in and illustrated our poem. We did shared reading and learned the characteristics of living things. We read Over and Under the Snow. W e did a Time for Kids – Ready for W inter. We found our mystery number and worked with partners to sequence 1-­‐10 and then identify the most, least, 1 more or less, 2 more or less, the number before and after. Wednesday Friday Thursday We greeted classmates. We said the pledge and our class promise. We did calendar, counted on and read our popcorn words. We reviewed the habits of thinkers. We had Family Friday. We did shared reading and reviewed the characteristics of living things. We read Katy and the Big Snow and made snowman puppets. We did fitness. We found our mystery number and practiced counting and writing the numeral that represents that number. We read Geraldine’s Big Snow. This is very lowkey, no party but we will decorate bags to collect valentines at school (no boxes or bags need to be prepared at home). Students can sign valentines at home (23 should be plenty). Please don’t put names on the envelopes. We line up the bags and drop them in one at a time. If there are names on envelopes it really slows down the process. If you have any empty tissue boxes or Pringles-type cans, we could use them for an upcoming project.
