2 1 Scarlet and Gray Newsletter January 4th to 8th, 2016 Volume 19, Issue 18 N Monday We did our ’q’ page of our ‘Big and Little’ book. We greeted classmates, said the pledge and our class promise and did calendar. We sang our ‘Days of the Week’ song and ‘Macarena Months’. We subitized numbers to 10 in random arrays, read our popcorn words and did our ABC charts’. We reviewed habits of thinkers. We used interactive writing to write a sentence about our kindergartner of the week. We learned about the main idea or plot of a story. We read Plot Chickens. We learned our new popcorn word ‘my’ and did rainbow writing of it. We read I Really Like Slop!, the latest Elephant and Piggie book by Mo Willems. We were introduced to our poem of the week ‘Chubby Little Snowman’. We wrote about our winter break. We graphed whether we stayed up until midnight on New Year’s Eve. We saw how some other cultures celebrate New Year’s. We did literacy workshop stations. We read a chapter in 26 Fairmount Avenue. We discovered our mystery number. We practiced correctly writing the numerals 0-5. Wednesday We did the ‘s’ page of our ‘Big and Little’ Book. We then greeted one another, said the pledge and our class promise and did calendar. We counted to 100 by fives and tens and read our popcorn words. We reviewed the six habits of thinkers. We did ‘Action Alphabet’. We wrote a sentence about our kindergartner of the week using interactive writing. We read Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats. We practiced identifying the beginning, middle and end of two pictures stories. We learned the difference between summarizing a story (small) and a retelling (everything). We did a dictation sentence in the commons. We sequenced the lines of our poem. We did literacy workshop. We read a chapter in 26 Fairmount Avenue. We found our mystery number and played Grab and Count in math. Tuesday We did our ‘r’ page of our ‘Big and Little’ book. We then greeted our friends. We said the pledge and our class promise and did calendar. We did our ABC charts with digraphs (ch, sh, th). We counted to 100 by ones and read our popcorn words. We reviewed the habits of thinkers. Our PM kindergartner of the week brought in his poster and a science image for us to write about and we wrote a sentence about him using interactive writing. We did speedwriting of our popcorn word. We read Cat’s Fairy Tale about having a beginning, middle and end to a story then we made a plan for a story that we will write with a beginning, middle and end. We read The Snowy Day by our January author, Ezra Jack Keats. We did a January Writing Sample. We did literacy workshop. We read My First Biography – Harriet Tubman and we watched an animated video about her life. We read a chapter in 26 Fairmount Avenue. We figured out our mystery number. We practiced correctly writing the numerals 6-10. Thursday We did our ‘t’ page of our ‘Big and Little’ book. We then greeted classmates. We said the pledge and our class promise and did calendar. We counted backwards from 20, subitized ten frames and read our popcorn words. We reviewed the habits of thinkers. We read Peter’s Chair by Ezra Jack Keats. We practiced summarizing and retelling it. We sequenced the beginning, middle and end of two more picture stories. The AM class had library. The PM class had recess. We read, highlighted the popcorn word in and illustrated our poem. We did literacy workshop. We finished our chapter book, 26 Fairmount Avenue. We found our mystery number. Friday We played ‘roll and count’ in math. We greeted classmates. We said the pledge and our class promise and did calendar. We counted on from various numbers and read our popcorn words. We reviewed the six habits of thinkers. We had Family Friday. We highlighted popcorn words in and read ‘My Family’. We read Duke Ellington. We practiced writing our first and last names in D’Nealian. We did literacy workshop. The PM class had library. We read The Little Plant Doctor- A Story About George Washington Carver.
