Rosemount Elementary Independent School District 196 April 2012 Leprechaun Ledger ——————–“Educating our students to reach their full potential”——————— 70 degrees and sunny, and HOMEWORK APRIL DATES: One component of the home and school connection is homework. And homework may be extra challenging with unseasonable warm weather and green grass. Having two boys of my own, I recognize that nightly homework is not always the most positive experience around the kitchen table. April 2~ Box Tops Spring Competition Starts. April 3~ PTO Meeting, 6:00-7:30 pm. April 10~ Band Concert, 7:00-7:30 pm. April 11~ Student Council Mtg., 8:50 am. April 17 & 18~ MCA Reading Tests in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grades. April 24 & 25~ MCA Math Tests in 3rd, 4th, & 5th grades. April 25~ Wendy’s Night, 5-8:00 pm. April 26~ 3rd Grade Field Trip. April 26~ Last Day of After School Classes. Establishing clear routines around homework, and building positive rewards and incentives can help reduce some of the homework hassles. Homework Routines • Find a location in the house where homework will be done. Determine a location that is reasonably free from distractions, and a location where parent assistance is nearby if needed. • Set up a homework center. Establish a clear work space with enough room to spread out school work, and provide the supplies that will be most likely needed. • Establish a consistent homework time. • Establish a daily homework schedule. What needs to be done first, second …. Incentive Systems • Establish a fun activity to do when homework is done is the simplest incentive. Television or playing a game gives the child something to look forward to do when they are done. • Earning points or stickers based on the child’s ability to complete an established goal for their homework is a more elaborate incentive system. An example might be after six days of completing homework at the established time and according to plan, the child could earn an extra 30 minutes of computer games. Plans where children are involved in setting of goals and rewards are generally more successful. • Building in Breaks. ~~~ PLANNING AHEAD: May 1~ PTO Meeting, 6:00 pm. Being consistent, setting goals and establishing clear expectations are important reminders to help children with their homework, and hopefully, making the experience constructive and positive. The use of e-mail has increased over the last few years. Most of our staff members do not have their e-mail accounts open during the school day while they are working with students. As stated in our handbook: The staff at RES have an agreement to reply to e-mails within two school days. If your need to communicate with a staff member is urgent, please call the school office (651-423-7690) and we will relay your message to the appropriate person. Typically these cards may be used only on plants. RES will get 15% of the money spent. It is a great way to raise money, by thinking about what you would already spend for plants this spring, and using the gift cards for those purchases. They are also a great gift idea. Just indicate on the form which garden center you want the cards from and how many of the dollar amount. We will then order the cards and have them for you in a week. We also will be sending out coupons from 3 local garden centers (Linder’s Garden, Pahl’s Markets, Fluegel Greenhouse) in early May. Purchases during these times will earn us 10-15% of the total purchasewhen you present the coupon. You can also double up the benefits by buying cards and then using them during the noted time periods. So if you want to help both ways you could buy some gift cards and earn us 15% and then use them during the time window and earn us another 10-15%! Cards will be delivered by April 26-27. PLEASE SEND CHECKS FOR THE TOTAL MADE OUT TO RES PTO. If you have any questions, please call Mr. Boyd. Calendar changes approved for 2012-13 At its March 12 meeting, the District 196 School Board approved changes to the 2012-13 school calendar that are intended to raise student achievement by giving teachers more time to analyze student data, collaborate with colleagues and receive training on how to target instruction to meet the needs of individual students. At the elementary level, the first of the changes will involve classroom teachers meeting with and assessing each of their students individually prior to the first day of the 2012-13 school year. These scheduled assessments will be held at all 18 elementary schools on Tuesday, August 21 and Wednesday, August 22, and eight additional hours that week or the following week as determined by each school. Details on scheduling the assessments are still being worked out and will be shared with parents prior to the end of this school year. These start-of-the-year assessments provide valuable data for teachers but can take several weeks to complete if teachers have to conduct them during the school day, as was previously done. In exchange for the days teachers will work assessing students in late August, the school year will end two days earlier for elementary students and teachers, on June 5 instead of June 7, which will be the last day for middle school and high school students. The other change to the 2012-13 calendar affects all levels K -12. It involves converting three days of school to days for teachers to analyze student achievement data, collaborate with colleagues and align their instruction. These days of no school for students are placed in the middle of each trimester in order to provide time for data review at regular intervals throughout the year. At the elementary and middle school levels, these days are scheduled for October 12, 2012, January 25, 2013 and April 26, 2013.
