Curriculum, Instruction and Student Learning HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY ROSEMOUNT ! GO IRISH ! RES Title One is hosting a The strategies and skills your child learns at Rosemount Elementary are mapped out from kindergarten through fifth grade. Teachers use the curriculum frameworks that are established at the district office to drive their instruction in their classroom. The textbooks and workbooks that your child uses in their classrooms are not the curriculum; rather, they are the resources to meet the curriculum frameworks. Curriculum comes from the school district; Instruction is developed at the school. You can view the School District 196 Curriculum Frameworks at www.district196.org under “Parent Resources,” then “Academic,” then “K-12 Curriculum.” Report Cards will be sent out on March 13th. These reporting systems are designed for clear communication of student achievement based on district expectations and standards. It allows for alignment between curriculum, instruction and assessment consistently across the district. Marking code descriptors (rubrics), are aligned with the language within our curriculum frameworks to clearly indicate student learning. I encourage you look closely at the marking codes on your child’s report card and the marking code descriptors found on our district website (under “Parent Resources/Tools”), as they relate to the curriculum your child has learned this trimester. Since 1989 the American School Food Service Association (ASFSA) first launched the National School Breakfast Week. The purpose was to raise awareness about the importance of starting off the day with a healthy breakfast, as well as to bring attention to the availability all students have to this program. Qualitative research performed by both Harvard University and the University of Minnesota shows students had improved classroom behavior and were more alert, happy and eager to learn. This is in addition to previous research showing students who eat breakfast have improved memory, problem-solving skills, verbal fluency and creative abilities. Each year we strive to bring the importance to the forefront of our schools and this year, National School Breakfast Week will take place March 2-6. This year our theme is Operation Body Power-up: What was your breakfast today? Our goal is to try and get the children to think about what they are making for food choices in the morning and how it will affect them for the rest of the day. We have developed an Operation Game body poster and have identified foods and nutrients in them that make our bodies function well. At the conclusion of National School Breakfast Week, a raffle will be held to determine which 3 elementary schools will receive a Nintendo Wii system to be used at the school. The more students who eat breakfast that week, the more chances there are for their school to win a Wii. Breakfast at school is $1.40 for full pay students and is free for those students that qualify for free and reduced meals. If you would like to have your child eat breakfast with us, please note they will be charged for it. We can debit the $1.40 per Breakfast from their student meal account. “Around the World” WAS A HUGE SUCCESS! Let's all think SPRING and maybe it will happen! Your children have completed 100 Days of school and will soon be counting down the days to the end of the school year. By now, our Family Fun Night has passed and the Reada-Thon has come to an end. I hope you and your family took some time to participate in both events. I know we had an excellent turn out at the Family Fun Night and a HUGE thank you goes out to Jennifer Heim and Karen Brown-Hepp, along with all the other volunteers who helped to organize, work the events, pass out meals, sell tickets and work the Silent Auctions. We could not have had such a successful event without all of you! Did any of you check out the Smart Boards in the 4th Grade Classrooms? The PTO helped to pay for those. And from what I hear in talking to Mrs. Grace, she LOVES it and so do her students. The Read-a-Thon is one of our easiest fundraisers, and your children are not selling 'stuff'. This fundraiser will continue next year, and with your participation, additional items such as Smart Boards and Family Fun events can be purchased for the students/families at RES. The Spring Fundraiser will be coming up soon, and this will be our last official “product selling” fundraiser. We will also be having a Spring Picnic in May. Keep collecting those Box Tops and remember, our next meeting is Tuesday, March 3rd, in the Library at 6. Daycare will be provided! HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE... Kim Beslin NEXT PTO Meeting Tuesday, March 3rd 6:00pm Children love to snuggle with something cozy. Thanks to the students in Mrs. Hemmen and Mrs. Young’s fourth grade classroom, 27 children in the community will now have a polar fleece pillow to comfort them and to let them know that someone else cares. As part of a service project, students cut, measured, stuffed, and tied 27 polar fleece pillows which they donated to Prince of Peace Mission Outpost. A local business donated funds for the materials that were needed. The pillows were fun to make and it felt wonderful to do something for someone else. The kids hope the pillows will comfort children who might not be as fortunate as themselves. All fourth grade students will get the opportunity to sign up for band beginning in March. The timeline for band signups are listed below. Please contact Mrs. Michelle Hoff with any questions.
