Summer Garden & Front Caretakers Summer Reading Library at RES We need families again who are willing to sign up for a week or two during the summer to: pull weeds, trim bushes, pick up trash, plant and transplant if needed in a designated area of our school. This is a great family project and can be done anytime during your week. Put in as much time as you can and help keep our school beautiful. Signup sheets will begin coming home in May so keep a look out! Summer is just around the corner! We are pleased to announce that the Rosemount Elementary Resource Room Library will be open again this summer. Reading is like playing ball or learning to ride a bike. The more you do it, the better you get. You have to practice. We realize that it can be difficult to find leveled books for your child, especially when he/she is a beginning reader. Consider visiting the RES Resource Room Library this summer to find “just right” books for your child. Teachers will be there to assist children as they select books. We will know the level at which your child is currently reading and will help your child find books at this level. Below you will find our summer schedule. The Resource Room is located in the third grade hallway across from Mrs. Hyster’s classroom. Please take advantage of our Summer Library Program. We hope to see you there! Wasn’t the weather terrific this week? Soon we will have some more rain and the plants will really take off. We will be sending out coupons from 3 local garden centers (Linder’s Garden center used from May 21-24th and Pahl’s Market & Fluegel’s Greenhouse used from May 10th-June 1st). Give some to neighbors and friends. More are available at the school office. Purchases during these times earn us 1015% of the total purchase when you present the coupon and tell them you are from RES. So if you want to help both ways you could use the gift cards purchased from us during the time window at Pahl’s, Linder’s and Fluegel’s and earn us another 10-15%! Visit our Website - http://district196.org/re Since April 19th -23rd was Volunteer Appreciation Week, I’d like to thank all the parents and grandparents who help out in the classrooms and library. To recognize those 100 volunteers, thank you notes and chocolate treats were distributed. Thank you to Rebecca Bina, Laurie Johnson, and Sabrina Powers for their help in decorating the cards and goodies! Volunteer Corner A big thank you goes to Teri Slater and her family for counting over 15,000 milk caps so our school can get 5 cents for each one. That’s a lot of Milk Moola! Thanks also to Laurie Johnson for boxing up all those caps. Please remember to save the marked milk caps from Kemps, Land-o-Lakes, and Kwik Trip containers. Send them in to school any time! Teri and her family will even count them during the summer months! The planning for the All School Field Trip and Field Event Afternoon, i.e. the 2010 Spring Picnic, on June 4th is under way. This year the picnic will be during the school day. Come in the afternoon to watch your child(ren) jump rope, hula hoop and compete in tug-of-war. Please consider helping that morning to set up and/or that afternoon to supervise the students during the events. Contact me if you’re interested or have any questions. Thank you also to Kendra Saal and the other 5th grade parent volunteers who are planning the last D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony. It will be held on Thursday, June 3rd at 2:15pm. It will certainly be a special occasion. It’s been a wonderful experience serving as the Volunteer Coordinator. I’ve really enjoyed meeting so many dedicated parents and getting to know the RES staff. I’m looking forward to another great school year starting this fall. Gratefully yours, Patty Grunklee, Volunteer Coordinator, resvolunteer@gmail.com and (651)423-7215 5th Grade music program “All That Jazz” Thursday, May 6th @ 6:30 pm Rosemount Elementary School On Friday, May 14th there will be a school-wide fundraiser called Caps for the Cure. The idea is simple, students pay $1 to have the opportunity of wearing a hat to school and all the proceeds go directly to The Cure Starts Now, an organization which helps to fund research to find treatments and ultimately a cure for pediatric brain cancers. Brain tumors are the second most common form of cancer in children and are the leading cause of cancer death in children under age 20, now surpassing acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Brain cancers are increasing in children. From 1973 to 1994, the number of reported brain tumors in children under 15 increased 1.8% per year. In adults, the number of brain tumor cases in the U.S. and Europe has increased by up to 40% over the past 20 years. The Cure Starts Now Cancer Research Foundation (501c3 Federal Non-Profit) is dedicated to a “homerun” cure for all cancers, starting first with one of the most deadly and difficult cancers: pediatric brain cancer. Many experts believe that the lessons we learn from fighting pediatric cancer may in fact provide us the critical first step in winning the battle against all forms of cancer, both pediatric and adult. The student council is really hoping to make this fundraiser a big success so find a hat and mark your calendars for May 14th! This is the last Ledger of the year?! What a fabulous run it’s been! Great big thank you’s to Tom Idstrom and the entire RES staff that keep everything cooking for our kids* every single day* all year long. What an amazing school we are associated with! Another great big thank you to each of the volunteers that made our events possible this year. Patty Grunklee, our rock star Volunteer Coordinator, depends on the support of the parents to make events run smoothly and successfully . Thank you’s to the Parents and Teachers that joined us at PTO each month – it takes a village and you have continually jumped in and started working with a passion that motivates me. Thank you for that! WELCOME to our new PTO President, Sabrina Powers! Due to safety concerns medications will not be sent home with students. Please make arrangements to pick up your child’s medication by the end of the school year. Medication not picked up will be discarded one week after the last day of school. Please remember that a new medication authorization signed by both parent and doctor are needed each school year for prescription medications. Thanks to the huge effort on the part of RES parents, students and staff to keep kids safe and healthy at school. All the hand washing, “cover your cough”, and stay home when ill education and reinforcement made a difference. Although we did have some students get sick, overall it was a GREAT year at RES. Have a safe and healthy summer. Steps to Respect is a program designed to prevent bullying and promote responsible, respectful student behavior. Some of the of the lessons included how to recognize, refuse and report bullying if it happens, and practicing friendship skills, such as joining group activities and managing conflicts with peers. As a final project, Mrs. Fuchs’ class was visited by Mr. Eckhoff’s 3rd grade class from Parkview Elementary. Mr. Eckhoff’s class also participated in Steps to Respect. The two third grade classes have been pen pals, communicating with each other throughout the school year through literature response to classroom read alouds. These classes had a wonderful time meeting, playing activities such as Pen Pal Bingo, eating lunch and having recess together. The highlight of the morning was each class did presentations about what they had learned from Steps to Respect. The presentations included songs, a puppet show about preventing bullying, a rap titled “Respecter Rap,” and games they had created using the concepts they learned from this unit. Mrs. Fuchs said, “It was an amazing day! The kids were all so respectful of each other, and were really able to use some of the skills they learned from the Steps to Respect lessons, in their interactions with their pen pal class. It was especially fun to share our projects with Mr. Eckhoff’s class and learn some new raps from them as well. I hope we can do it again next year!” Rosemount Elementary School Monday, May 3, 2010 6:30-7:30 pm. ~ Meet the Kindergarten Teachers and see the Kindergarten Classrooms Leaving Rosemount Elementary for the 2010-2011 School year?
