How Can You Help with Learning At Home?

Following parent teacher-conferences, I am often asked about our reading curriculum and strategies that parents can use to support their children at home. Here are a couple strategies that you can use when you read with your child, or after your child reads a book.

Teachers are training students to look for three connections: text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world/others.

Work with your child to make the following connections while reading.

Text-to-Self: Reminds the reader of an experience he or she has had. When I read a book like Owl Moon, I think about walking through the woods in northern Minnesota at night during the winter. I can recall the stillness of the night, and the crunching sound of the snow under my boots.

Text-to-Text: Reminds the reader of another text he or she has read.

I think of the main characters in the books

Holes and Maniac Magee and how they were similar in their lives as adolescent boys. Both characters were loners and mavericks while dealing with conflict and bullies.

In both cases they overcame obstacles and became stronger individuals.

Text-to-World: Reminds the reader of knowledge he or she has about the subject through experiences, videos, conversations, classroom instruction, etc… After reading

Dr. Seuss’ book, The Lorax, to second grade students at

RES; the students made connections from the book to the world regarding pollution, respect for property and taking care of our earth.

Help your child by making connections and by asking questions.

I hope you find these strategies helpful. Let me know how it goes.

February was a busy month for

RES

Volunteer

volunteers.

Corner

Our month started out with movies and popcorn for the classes who collected the most Box

Tops. Thanks to all the parents who helped then.

Thanks also to everyone who donated to Pennies for Haiti.

Our school did a great job raising money to assist the

American Red Cross in their efforts after the terrible earthquake. I really appreciated the help of Lori Kalata,

Barb Hester, and Laura Hecht for collecting coins, counting bills, and going to the bank.

Also, a big thank you goes to Kendra Saal for her months of hard work in coordinating a wonderful Family Fun

Night. Everyone had a fabulous time! Thanks to all the parent, teacher, and student volunteers who helped to make the Night run so smoothly.

Thanks to the parents who came to school and shared stories during the All School Read Day.

Jennifer Heim did a great job organizing the Book Fair during Conferences and Family Fun Night. Thanks for all her efforts, and thanks to the volunteers who sold books and other Scholastic items.

Thanks to Patty Zellman for coordinating the teachers’ meals during Conferences.

And one more thanks to Kendra Saal for making Spring Picture Day a success. We appreciate all you do for our school!

JOIN 5TH GRADE BAND

NEXT YEAR

All fourth grade students are invited to the Band Demonstration concert at Rosemount High School on Wednesday,

March 17. Students will be walking with their classroom teachers to the High School. All students receive the Band

Handbook with all the information regarding participation in fifth grade band in their Friday folder on March 12.

Please contact Mrs. Michelle Hoff with any questions.

The National Education Association's Read

Across America Day is the nation's largest reading event, occurring each year on or near

Dr. Seuss's birthday (March 2 nd

). Dr. Seuss is the author of The Cat in the Hat. Parents can promote reading in the home all year round.

A parents’ page on the Read Across America website at www.nea.org/teadacross offers tips and resources.

Here are a few tips:

Visit your local library often.

A book or gift certificate for a book store makes a great gift.

Let your child see you reading, whether it is the newspaper, a magazine, or the latest bestseller.

Show your child how people use reading all the time. Read aloud street and store signs, maps, billboards, menus, and labels on packages.

Create a library for your child of new or used books.

Notice to Parents:

Under the Federal No Child Left Behind law parents have the right to ask for certain information about their child’s classroom teachers, and requires the District to give parents this information in a timely manner if they ask for it. Specifically, parents have the right to ask for the following information about each of their child’s classroom teachers:

Whether the Department of Education has licensed or qualified the teacher for the grades and subjects he or she teaches.

Whether the Department of Education has decided that the teacher can teach in a classroom without being licensed or qualified under state regulations because of special circumstances.

The teacher’s college major; whether the teacher has any advanced degrees and, if so, the subject of the degrees.

If you would like to receive any of this information, please call

Tom Pederstuen, Director of Human Resources at

651.423.7859.

NOTES FROM THE NURSE…

The school nurse continues to collect and provide information for the MDH (Minnesota Department of Health) regarding illness in our community. Please remember to call the school attendance line at 651-683-6969 ext. 92101 if your child will be absent. Please specify the reason for the absence. If they are home due to illness please specify the symptoms that they are home with, especially if they have fever with cough and/or sore throat. It is preferred that parents call the attendance line to report absences rather than the main office so that the main phone line remains open.

Please remember the RES Nurse webpage and the school calendar have information regarding illnesses and other health related information. Please continue to report contagious diseases (eg. chicken pox, strep throat etc) to the School Nurse, Jeanne Fifield.

Pennies for Haiti collects $3,000

The   most   money   collected   in   one   room

              was   $311.04,   from   Mr.

  Kennedy’s   class.

The excitement was contagious as the children  of Rosemount Elementary brought in their coins  and some dollars to their classroom and  watched their blue containers fill up.  Then the  containers were emptied and counted at the  bank and the blue containers were filled up  again. This happened for three weeks.

On February 24 th , 2010 Rosemount Elementary

School gave a check for $3,000 to the American

Red Cross.  This money will go directly to the  relief effort in Haiti after the January 12 th  earth‐ quake. Even in these difficult economic times,

Rosemount families showed their generosity.

Thank you to all of the families that made this  fundraising so successful!

Garden Center

Gift Cards

~ ~ ~

Benefiting the RES

Gardens

This year we will again be offering gift cards from local garden centers that you can buy this spring.

This will be held in March & April ( I n time for

Mothers Day ) . RES will get 15% of the money spent so it is a great way to raise money by thinking about what you would already spend for plants this spring and buying gift cards to spend on those purchases. They are also a great gift idea. You will receive a form to fill out for the first round, in the

February 26 th Friday folder. Just indicate on the form which garden center you want the cards from and how many of the dollar amount. We will then order the cards and have them for you in a week after the due date.
