It’s that time again…
For the RES Family Picnic
Thursday, May 22, 2008
Sun, warmer weather, and more daylight are some of
the highlights of spring. This means more time to play
outside – for some it might mean “the senior slide.”
However, academic motivation is not isolated to this
season. Dr. Michael B. Brown cites the following ideas
for parents to help increase their children’s academic
motivation.
Encourage Positive Family Relationships and

Responsibities
Create reasonable structure at home and responsibility
through assigned chores and expectations. Selfdiscipline at home can transfer to school-related learning. Make time to do fun things with your child and
praise your child when they are doing well.
∗
Hot dog, chips, cookie, bottle of water, all
for only $2.00 when you pre-order. Tickets
will come home with your child on May
20th.
∗

Teach Habits that Encourage Learning

∗
Bring your lawn chairs or picnic blanket
Have a set routine for school work. Make sure your
child’s school work is completed at home, without distraction. Limit things that interfere with learning such
as watching TV or playing video games.

Model the Importance of Learning
Plan family activities that encourage learning. Visit the
library, museums and parks. Express the importance of
learning and that it is the central purpose of school.
Talk with your child about their interests and how it
might be related to school and possibly a career.
Work with Your Child’s Teacher to Enhance Academic
Motivation
Model respectful engagement with your child’s teacher.
Communicate with the teacher and develop a system to
give reinforcements at home for working hard in school.
A child with positive academic motivation has a desire to
learn, likes learning-related activities, and believes that
school is important. Positive academic motivation not
only helps a child succeed in school, but also helps the
child to see that learning is rewarding and important in
all aspects of life – school, work and community.
Thanks for your partnership in your child’s education,
Tom

TARGET’S Take Charge of Education:
Hello,
My name is Kristyne Dahnert and I am
the Team Leader- Guest Experience, at
the new Apple Valley South Super Target. Our store
will now be giving your school their Take Charge of
Education check in March and September of each year.
You can enroll in the Take Charge of Education program by applying for a Target Visa Credit Card, Target
Credit Card, or Target Check Card. Once you apply, you
can sign up for Take Charge of Education. When you
sign up for Take Charge of Education, Target will donate up to 1% of your Redcard purchases to the eligible K-12 school of your choice. Your school can use the
funds for anything they need, from sports equipment
to sheet music. The kids love it! The 1% really adds up
to a lot if enough people use their Redcard. It just
takes a couple minutes to apply. Come into the new Apple Valley South Super Target and we can get you
started in enrolling in the TCOE program.
We’re Moving Over The Summer…
( Please return this to the office if you are planning to move).
ATTENTION BOX TOP
COLLECTORS!!!
There are only three more
Friday Box Top collection
dates left before the Spring Box Top
competition ends!!
Everyone has done an excellent job during the
“Spring into Box Top” campaign. In the first
seven weeks, we have collected more than
18,000 Box Tops.
The end of the school year is coming fast and
we want to add as many to this year’s total as
possible, so it is time for everyone to check the
kitchen cupboards (General Mills, Betty
Crocker, Zip Lock), and bathrooms cabinets
(Kleenex, Cottonelle, Huggies). There are some
tight races between many of the classes.
June 5th – Box Top Picnic at Central Park!
The top collecting class in each grade will be
packing a bag lunch and enjoying a picnic at
Central Park with ice cream treats for dessert.
Who will earn the picnic?
