October is Anti-Bullying Month

One of the student expectations at Rosemount Elementary School is to “Be Respectful to Yourself and Others.” The way students interact and work together throughout the day is most always respectful and appropriate. Bullying in schools is on the minds of government leaders, parents and school staff. Identifying certain behaviors as

“bullying” behaviors needs specific definition.

This week we had assemblies for students in grades 1-5 to address bullying behavior

(Kindergarten will be working on friendship and positive skills appropriate for their age level). We defined bullying, and gave students strategies on how to refuse and report bullying.

At Rosemount Elementary we are using the following definition of naming bullying behavior.

Bullying is:

• Unfair, (and)

• On Purpose, (and)

• Repeated, (and)

• One-sided. * with POWER

In order for students to learn, we must create a school climate that is safe, respectful and orderly.

I believe that a positive culture exists at RES.

Our intention for addressing an anti-bullying initiative is to continue to build a school community where students learn, feel safe and are treated with respect.

Thank you for your partnership in education,

Tom

Registrations will go home during conferences.

With the pending arrival of winter comes the possibility of school cancellations or delayed starts due to inclement weather. While “snow days” may be fun for students, the district does not take closing school lightly and wants students to be in school whenever possible. We understand these decisions impact families throughout the district who may need to find alternative care for their children if school is not in session.

The over-riding concern in making these decisions is the safety of students, staff and others in the community. Several factors are considered, including road conditions and visibility, snow depth, wind chill, the weather forecast for the remainder of the day and the actions of other school districts in our area. These decisions are made based on what is best for all children in the district. If parents are ever concerned about sending their child to school because of weather conditions, it is always their choice to keep them at home.

If the decision is made to either delay or cancel school, the information will be communicated to district employees and parents via an early-morning phone call from the SchoolConnects mass notification service. In addition, the cancelation or delay will be communicated:

On the banner of the district website at

District196.org (this is where information appears first, even before the SchoolConnects phone call);

On all four Twin Cities television network affiliate stations and WCCO-AM (830) radio. Look/listen for the “Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan Public

Schools,” and

On the district information line recording at

651-423-7777.

If school is canceled, decisions about whether to hold evening high school and community education activities are communicated on the district website and high school websites.

Use of e-mail at Rosemount Elementary School:

We value effective communication at our school. The use of e-mail has increased over the last few years. Most of our staff members do not have their e-mail accounts open during the school day while they are working with students. As stated in our handbook: The staff at RES have an agreement to reply to e-mails within two school days. If your need to communicate with a staff member is urgent, please call the school office (651-423-7690) and we will relay your message to the appropriate person.

Rosemount Elementary is abuzz with activities…

Read-a-thon, field trips, testing, etc. Thankfully, we all had the MEA break to take time to rejuvenate. Parent volunteers are busy helping throughout the school so I’d like to say “Thank you” for all your efforts.

For all who cheered their student(s) and helped at the Fitness Fun Runs, thanks for coming out to the RHS track. Thanks also to

Lori Kalata and Nancy Asmus for labeling and taping the new leveled books for the Resource Room. Thanks to those who helped at the field trips and classrooms parties. I also want to recognize Ramona Murphy for hosting

Wendy’s Night and for counting milk caps &

Campbell Soup labels.

A big thank you goes to Sarah Rothstein and her fellow Reading Rocks volunteers. The fundraiser is a lot of work – collecting and checking forms, counting minutes, organizing prizes and of course, counting all the money!

Great job!

And last, but not least, thanks to all parents and students who helped with the Monster

Mash Costume Dance. Thank you to Shazana

Hardy for organizing the DJ and for the moms who came in to pop the popcorn. Hopefully, everyone had a fun time and enjoyed the dance, bingo, snacks and crafts.

Best wishes for Fall Conferences.

Stop by the Book Fair during teacher conferences next week. This fall there is a great new group of books out, for readers at all levels. Remember to bring along any

Reading Rocks vouchers your child earned, this is a great opportunity to add a couple of books to your home library. Remember parents must be present when vouchers are redeemed. The school keeps 50% of the earnings from this fair, which we use to purchase additional books for the school and keep our birthday book program going.

If you cannot make it to the fair, you can check out our online fair at: http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/ homepage/rosemountelementary

Any books ordered online will be delivered to the classroom the week of 11/14/11. All orders placed online get added to our schools earnings as well.
