If your child has not chosen their book yet, now is the time to do so! Also, I have additional packets if yours has been lost. February 27, 2009 timothyp@psdschools.org We just finished Unit Eight, which targeted fractions. Unit 9 revisits coordinates, area, and introduces capacity and volume. I will also be including some math problems in CSAP format to prepare students for the upcoming assessments. Literature Circle Supplies: We are in need of GLUE STICKS and SMALL STICKY NOTES. Pick up a few extra packs and send them in - it is much appreciated! Writing/Language/Spelling - Science Opportunities - Jean Sanfacon jsanfaco@psdschools.org Students enjoyed identifying how advertisements used logic, emotions, and a sense of trustworthiness to convince viewers and readers. Next week, students will be choosing persuasive topics and creating drafts. Some may wish to send their letters/essays to a publication or a school official. Please let me know if you prefer that your child’s name NOT be published. ► Spelling homework – We worked on personification this week to help with the spelling sentences assignment. Next week’s homework will be from the text book. There are two great opportunities on Saturday, February 28 for families to have some fun with science. Putnam Elementary is hosting a science carnival from 11:003:00. There will many fun activities including cockroach races, cool lasers and giant bubbles. Admission is $2. Putnam is at 1400 Maple Street. Social Studies – Announcements & Upcoming Events Students are currently studying exploration and discovery in social studies. As part of this unit of study they are creating board games based upon the journeys of explorers from the pre-colonial and colonial period. Students will design a game that incorporates the route the chosen explorer took and facts about the journey. Most students will be able to finish this assignment in the time allotted at school The 18th Annual Little Shop of Physics Open House is also on Saturday in the Lory Student Center at CSU. There are over 250 interactive experiments for kids and adults. This free activity is always fun for everyone. If students write a brief description of three of their favorite activities from either science event we will give them extra-credit in science.
