Fifth Grade Happenings Ms. Sanfacon’s Class January 30, 2009 Reading-Audrey Hazleton ahazleto@psdschools.org Math - Tim Pearson February is “I Love to Read Month!” Students are bringing home logs to record their nightly minutes this month. Prizes will be awarded for the most minutes, class averages, and most books read. Please help your child by signing the sheet each week! Third Quarter Book Projects Next week, each student will be assigned a book project that will be due just before Spring Break. Help your child to plan for the project by choosing their book early so they can have it read when they begin the project! We have skipped Unit 7 because it isn’t supported by our standards and are moving on to Unit 8. Look for your child to bring the Family Letter with tips and study link answers. Writing/Language/Spelling – SCIENCE Jean Sanfacon jsanfaco@psdschools.org WE NEED YOUR HELP! Students want to publish their narrative stories in some kind of book form. Can you help type these pieces? Please email or call me. (488-8410) Next week we start persuasive writing. What do you children want to convince you to do? Students have been having a ball with our Variables unit! We have been making pendulums, floating boats, flipping objects, and more! The main concept students need to grasp is that good science experiments only change one variable at a time in order to understand what changes the outcome of the experiment. Language Arts: Students took their third Every Day Edit. quix today. I see great progress. An area for growth is when to use apostrophes – distinguishing between a possessive and plural. Please help your kids get their spelling homework in on time. It’s assigned Mondays and due Fridays. Fifty States and Capitals – Quizzes continue! Practice at home, in the car, on the computer, with a puzzle! We know it is tedious, but kids shouldn’t leave fifth grade without knowing their states and capitals! Your feedback will really help me improve as a teacher. Thanks to those of you who have already taken he time to complete one. Conferences- If you’d like one, please contact me if you already haven’t. timothyp@psdschools.org Many students are struggling with fraction conversions because they don’t know their basic facts.
