an understanding of the customs, arts, literature, history and geography associated with the Spanish
language.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
As your teacher, you can expect that I will:
• respect you and treat you fairly and impartially
• listen to you and be available for extra help
• provide you with opportunities and activities to learn, practice, and assess your language skills
• grade and return your work as soon as possible
• create a classroom that is challenging, rewarding, and fun!
As a student, I expect that you will:
• respect students, teachers, and visitors in the classroom
• arrive to class on time (be in your seat, books and materials on your desk and ready to work when the
bell rings)
• be prepared for class with required materials, assignments, etc.
• focus and be attentive
• participate in class activities and prepare for assessments
• follow behavior expectations from the BHS handbook in regards to dress code, language, behavior,
electronic devices, etc.
• refrain from any damage to the room environment
• seek help as needed from the teacher
CLASSROOM POLICIES:
Attendance
• Participation: Participation is a crucial component to learning a foreign language; therefore, good
attendance is essential for success in this class. Participation is included in your grade.
• Unexcused absences: Any work, tests, or quizzes missed due to an unexcused absence will receive a
grade of zero.
• Excused Absences: Excused absences (illness, emergency, etc.) will not count against you or lead you
to losing credit. However, upon returning to school, it is your responsibility for asking for your work. You
have 1 school week to make up the work.
• Planned Absences: If you miss school because of a planned absence (doctor appointment, field trip,
etc.) you are still responsible for the work, as if you had been there. Ask for the work in advance. If you
are absent the day before an announced test, you will take it with the rest of the class.
• Make-up Tests: To make up a test, you must schedule an appointment.
Assignments
• All assignments are due at the beginning of the period when the bell rings.
• Be responsible for knowledge of assignments, tests, quizzes and projects. Utilize your agenda book to
keep yourself organized.
• Late work will receive half credit or no credit.
Academic Honesty
Cheating on any assignment will result in no credit for all students concerned. Using a translation
program for compositions, copying homework or allowing another student to copy your homework will
also result in a grade of zero.
GRADING POLICY:
Quarter grades: are based on journals, class work and participation, homework, quizzes, tests, and
and the final exam.
Journals and Participation: Journals are designed as an introduction, a set-induction, or a review of the
previous day’s lesson. Journals are given daily, at the beginning of the class period. If you are tardy, you
will not be able to complete the journal. (10%)
Class work: Includes actively participating in all class, group and partner activities. These may include
dialogues, readings, writing and listening activities. Class work also includes note taking. (20%)
Homework: Learning a foreign language requires more than understanding the material. It is necessary
that you practice it daily and memorize. (20%)
Quizzes: Quizzes are designed to assess what is covered in class. You can expect to have a quiz every
week. (20%)
Tests: Unit tests will be given at the end of each unit and will cover all the material learned in that unit.
You can expect to have a test about every 4 weeks. (30%)
Pre and Post Exams: Will take place at the beginning and at the end of the school year and will assess
your progress in the four facets of foreign language learning: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Since we will be following MYP standards, all students must strive to be:

and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be
sustained throughout their lives.

They explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they acquire
in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.
Thinkers
They exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach
complex problems, and make reasoned, ethical decisions.

language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in
collaboration with others.

They act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of
the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the
consequences that accompany them.

perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to
seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.

They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a
personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the
