BEHAVIOR: You are expected to be in your seat with ALL required materials
when the bell rings. If not, you’re late. You will need your book EVERY day, so
bring it, covered please. You will also need paper and something to write with.
There will be NO CRITICISM of your classmates.
GRADING: Written tests, quizzes and oral tests will account for approximately 70% of
your grade. (ALL written work must be easily legible to the teacher, whose eyes are
poor.) Included in this will be a class notebook, which you will need to provide. You will
keep homework, notes and other class materials in the notebook. The notebook is worth
25 pts. each 6 weeks. This is the equivalent of 1 test score per semester. Each student
receives a 25 or a zero. You will need to bring a manila folder from home. All graded
material will be stored in it. This will be kept in the classroom and returned along with
graded materials. (You can look at any test or quiz in the classroom whenever you
want.) I’ll put a current grade scale up and you’ll know exactly what grade you have.
The grading scale will be as follows:
A+
A
AB+
B
B-
98-100%
93-97%
90-92%

ORAL PARTICIPATION: Oral assessment will account for 15% (approximately) of your
grade. Virtually every block day we will have an opportunity for oral participation. This is
voluntary, in the sense that I will not call on you. Obviously, if you never participate you
will receive a zero. You will be assessed on how much, not on how perfectly, you speak.
This is your chance to show me what you know!
DAILY PARTICIPATION: This will account for the remaining 15% (approximately) of your
grade. For participating in games, working in pairs or groups, having your homework and
most importantly SPEAKING SPANISH I will give you these points. Twenty-five (25) each
6 weeks. This is also the equivalent of 1 test score per semester. Failure to do these
things will result in the loss of two (2) points each time. I’ll take off 5 pts. for each
unexcused absence and 2 for each excused. (You can’t participate if you’re not here.)

You can make up an excused absence by coming in during tutorial. No make-ups for
unexcused absences.
CIRCUMLOCUTION: This is a big word that basically means; find a way to express
yourself. This is THE challenge of a language class. You have to accept that your English
vocabulary is much larger than your Spanish. Speaking Spanish the ENTIRE period is the
best way to be able to circumlocute. This means no chatting in English with classmates.
Who benefits from this?
HOMEWORK: YES! HOMEWORK COUNTS TOWARD YOUR GRADE! We’ll have
homework almost every night and I’ll ALWAYS check it during class. If you don’t have
your homework COMPLETED I’ll take off 2 participation points. It’s your responsibility to
make sure you understand the assignment. “I didn’t understand” will not be accepted as
an excuse.
MAKE-UPS: All graded material (oral, written tests and quizzes) that you miss must be
made up. If you are absent on test day you will take the test our next class OR at the next
tutorial, at my discretion.
CHEATING: See Academic Integrity Policy.
EXTRA HELP: Extra help can be gotten every morning, not just tutorials. I’m usually here
around 7:20. I’ll be in my room during most lunch periods as well. If we do something you
don’t get you’d better come see me. (Inverted pyramid.) Remember that you will know
there is a problem well before I will. Do your best to stay up to date. I would like for our
relationship to be like that of a player and a coach.
