March 2011 BSYS 2563, Business Communications Course Philosophy and Instructor Requirements Philosophy: This course is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to communicate effectively in the professional workplace. It will prepare students to think strategically about communication as well as helping to improve written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Instructor Objectives: The instructor's teaching techniques should ensure that the students are able to: Understand the process of communication. Demonstrate the ability to write and format quality e-mail messages and memos, positive letters and business messages, persuasive and marketing messages, and negative messages. Demonstrate the ability to research and prepare informal and formal business reports that are professionally formatted including the use of graphics and correct documentation. Prepare an effective oral presentation appropriate for business audiences. Create an employment portfolio which includes a customized résumé, cover letter example(s), and follow-up documents. Identify and apply effective employment interview techniques. Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with a cross-cultural audience. Course Teaching Requirements: The following should be followed by all instructors teaching this course (online and in the traditional setting): 1. The following fundamental concepts are essential and should be covered during the semester: a. Process of communication b. Developing team, etiquette and listening skills c. Communicating across cultures d. Writing Process (3X3 process is suggested method) e. Format and composition of e-mail messages and memos, positive letters and business messages, persuasive and marketing messages, and negative messages f. Format and composition of formal and informal business reports g. Preparation of oral presentations h. Employment communication including résumés, cover letters, and follow-up documents i. Employment interviewing techniques 2. Homework assignments (online and in the traditional classroom) should include exercises that require students to demonstrate an understanding of the preceding concepts. 3. Examinations covering the preceding concepts should be given. The exams may be objective or application. The final exam must be comprehensive. Assessment Responsibilities: Instructors teaching this course (online and in the traditional classroom) are expected to participate in assessment activities as required by the University. You will be provided further information/instructions by the lead instructor during the term assessments are to be completed.
