March 2011 HIA 1103, Medical Terminology I Course Philosophy and Instructor Requirements Philosophy: This course is designed to prepare students to master the language of medicine. A study of basic medical terminology including word parts, diseases, abbreviations, spelling, and diagnostic procedures is included/ Instructor Objectives: The instructor's teaching techniques should ensure that the students are able to: Identify and define word parts Analyze and define medical terms Build medical terms for given definitions. Identify organs and structures of the body systems Define, pronounce, and spell surgical terms related to body systems. Define, pronounce, and spell diagnostic terms related to body systems. Define, pronounce, and spell complementary terms related to body systems. Interpret the meaning of abbreviations related to body systems. Course Teaching Requirements: The following should be followed by all instructors teaching this course (online and in the traditional setting): The following body systems should be covered in class and exercises completed. Integumentary Respiratory Urinary Male reproductive Female reproductive Obstetrics and Neonatology Cardiovascular, Immune, and Lymphatic Blood Digestive Eye Ear Musculoskeletal Nervous Endocrine Tests should be given at the completion of each section. Daily grades should not count for more than 10% of the course grade. The final exam must be comprehensive and count 20% of the course grade. Assessment Responsibilities: Instructors teaching this course will be expected to participate in assessment activities as dictated by the division. You will be given further information/instructions by the lead instructor during the term assessments are to be completed.
