MUS 1403 Music Fundamentals Course Philosophy Philosophy-Music Fundamentals is the study of music elements beginning with the properties of sound and concluding with triad construction and recognition. Instruction will include beginning sight singing and ear training. No previous musical training is necessary. Open to all university students. Corequisite: MUS 1402 or consent of instructor Expectations and Objectives: 1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of music notation 2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of rhythm and meter 3. Students will demonstrate the ability to identify and construct scales 4. Students will demonstrate the ability to identify and construct modes 5. Students will demonstrate the ability to identify and construct key signatures 6. Students will demonstrate ability to identify and construct intervals, including inversions 7. Students will demonstrate ability to identify and construct triad and their inversions Assignments and Exams: Students will be given regular homework assignments to reinforce the course objectives. An exam will be given at the end of each chapter, and a final comprehensive exam will be given at the end of the semester. Assessment: Instructors are expected to participate in the assessment of the course as directed by the lead instructor.
