Swimming As the St John’s Sports Centre is closed for refurbishment, Year 5 are not swimming this term. Once the plans have been finalised we will inform parents. Although fancy stationary is lovely, it is hugely distracting. Please can it be kept at home. Water bottle and snacks Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school – Year 5 classrooms do not have water fountains. Snacks need to healthy. Homework Maths Mathletics will be set alternate weeks however children will be encouraged to use Mathletics to help their quick recall of tables and bonds. Given out on Monday or Tuesday depending on the group and due on a Thursday or Friday. Mathletics homework will always be shown on a slip which will be pasted into the homework book. Please sign this and feel free to comment on your child’s effort. Literacy Written tasks Given out on Wednesday, due on Monday. Expected to be stuck into Literacy homework book (red) unless told otherwise Spelling Given weekly for a test. Given on paper. Homework Club Homework club is available on Thursday lunchtimes. Pupil Premium children also have the opportunity of attending homework club on a Wednesday after school. Learning in Year 5 This term our theme is the Anglo Saxons. We will focus on: Confidence and enjoyment Independent learning – doing things on their own Collaboration – working with others Perseverance – determination Improved listening skills High expectations of their own work There are trips near the end of this topic to look forward to. Literacy Reading Please read with your child on a daily basis. Please sign this off in their reading record. There are rewards in each class! While you are reading with your child, these are the skills you could be focusing on: Decoding = reading words accurately Comprehension = knowing what words mean Inference = reading beyond the text for implied meaning (e.g. ‘With tears dripping down her cheeks, Emma ran out of the room…’) So how was Emma feeling? Writing Writing skills are developed in all areas of learning, as are speaking and listening GPS (Grammar, punctuation, spelling) are taught discretely on a weekly basis and then integrated into all writing tasks.
