General Course Description: English II is a course designed to increase each student’s ability to think and communicate
logically and effectively, and to increase his/her insight into the human condition. In pursuit of these goals, we will study
a curriculum of multi-cultural literature, composition skills, speaking and listening skills, usage skills, and vocabulary
development.
Expectations for Classroom Behavior and Management:
1. Be Respectful: Value each other’s opinion, culture, race, gender, religion, etc.
a. Talking while someone else “has the floor” is unacceptable.
b. Racist, sexist, or derogatory names/statements/jokes will not be tolerated.
c. Sexual harassment will not be tolerated.
d. Bullying will not be tolerated
e. Yelling and/or “talking back” are forms of insubordination and are unacceptable.
2. Be Punctual:
a. Be in your seat before the tardy bell rings. Not being in your seat when the bell rings, entering my
classroom while the bell is ringing, or entering after the bell has rung are my definitions of tardy.
b. If you are tardy due to a teacher/staff member, bring a note from that adult; you will not be sent back for
one, and you will be marked tardy if you do not have a note.
3. Be Responsible
a. Take responsibility for your own actions (Don’t play the blame game.)
b. Know when assignments are due by using a planner or agenda.
c. Make-up work is your responsibility. Check the make-up work folder when you return from an absence.
Complete the make-up work at home so that you do not fall further behind.
d. Cheating will result in a zero for all involved.- Please see the Honor Code form for additional
consequences.
e. Ask permission before working on another teacher’s assignment in my class.
f. Students will be expected to keep the classroom clean.
g. Follow the student code of conduct.
4. Be Prepared:
a. Have your “tools of the trade” before you enter the room.
Your “tools of the trade” are:
1. writing utensil (pencil and blue or black ink pen)
2. textbook (when required)
3. assigned reading material
4. homework (completed to the best of your ability)
5. 4 different colored highlighters

Consequences for Choosing to Not Follow the Class Rules:
1. Verbal Warning
2. Teacher/Student Conference
3. Parent Notification
4. Teacher/Parent/Student Conference
5. Discipline Referral to administrator


A violation of the classroom expectations or student
code of conduct may result in an immediate discipline
referral/removal from the classroom
Severe/Repeated discipline issues will result in a
negative conduct grade which may have implications
for those wishing to be eligible for National Honor
Society, Student Council, etc.
Classroom Management: Students are expected to behave appropriately in class and follow all school rules as detailed in
the Student Handbook. Parents will be contacted as soon as possible concerning serious discipline problems. It is expected
that a serious and positive learning environment will encourage students to be responsible for themselves and for their
work. It is also expected that a student-centered classroom with active participation by and interaction among students and
the teacher will be consistently achieved.
Plagiarism- All assignments submitted to turnitin.com show the level of originality of the work. Embedded quotes,

is the responsibility of the student to be sure that the correct assignment is submitted to the correct location on
time.
Communication: All communication concerning grades should be done in person before or after school. Specific
information regarding due dates, handouts, announcements and other information similar to that can be found on my

include vocabulary quizzes, compositions, tests, novel journals, etc.
Late Work: When you turn in work late, you are giving away points.
Daily grades: 1 day late 70 max; thereafter, teacher discretion with a maximum of 50.
Major grades: 1 day late 75 max; 2nd day late 60; thereafter, teacher discretion with a max. of 50.
“Ask Three Before Me” Policy: Students are recommended to exchange phone numbers/emails with at least three
classmates in your class period. In the event of an absence, students should contact their peers first to receive notes about
what was covered in class.
Attendance and Make-up: Students must be present 90% of the time to earn course credit. When students are absent, it is
the responsibility of the student to ask for missed work, not the teacher. Failure to do so in a timely fashion, which is one
day allowance per day missed, will result in subsequent zeroes.
1. See me in advance or as soon as you return from an absence. You can also email or call me while you are out.
This is strongly recommended if you unexpectedly are out for a long period of time.
2. Major assignments (projects, papers, etc.) are due on the assigned date whether you are present in class that day or
not. If you are unable to attend class on the due date, e-mail or send your assignment with a friend, sibling, or
parent. The intention is to insure that students do not stay home or miss class in order to complete assignments.
3. Quizzes, tests, and other assessments assigned in advance must be taken on the assigned date even if you are
absent the preceding class.
Make up work day- If you miss a quiz, test, or any other assessment please fill out the form to make up a missed
assignment. Check your calendar to see which teacher you will make up your assignment with. It is possible the make up
teacher is not your normal English II teacher. The English II team makes up work on Thursdays in the morning from
6:50 to 7:20 and in the afternoon from 2:40-3:40. Quizzes can generally be made up in 30 minutes or less while a test
or timed writing might take 45 minutes. All make-up work must be completed within one week of your return to school
unless you have made other arrangements with me (very special circumstances only). Failure to do so may result in a
grade of 0.
