Syllabus for 6th Grade Math – Accelerated Sutton Middle School: 2015-16 Sutton Middle School is an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program School. It is a program of international education designed to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world. TEXTBOOKS: The textbook used in the sixth grade is Holt Mathematics Course 1 Georgia ©2007, Holt Mathematics Course 2 Georgia ©2007 and Mathematics in Context, we will also use the CRCT Math Coach Book. The students will create an Interactive notebook. The individual student’s Interactive Note Book (INB) is an instrumental resource. The INB will be utilized as the math text book. COURSE DESCRIPTIONSixth grade focuses on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking SUPPLIES: Students are expected to have these supplies available to them EVERYDAY in class: Composition Notebook, Pencil, Color Pencils, Glue Stick, Scissor, Graph Paper and Highlighter. It is recommended that you purchase three composition notebooks and six glue sticks since you will need to replenish these supplies throughout the year. One pack or pad of graph paper is needed. Georgia Standards of Excellence Based Units Unit 1: Number System Fluency & Rational Explorations Sample Activity: Pick A Number, Any Number Unit 2: Rate, Ratio and Proportional Reasoning Using Equivalent Fractions Sample Activity: The Rocky Mountain Vacation Trip Problem Unit 3: Expressions Sample Activity: Sweet Tooth Chocolate Shop Unit 4: One Step Equations and Inequalities Sample Activity: Want Ads Unit 5: Area and Volume Sample Activity: STEM Fish Tank Foam Packaging Design Unit 6: Statistics Sample Activity: Order Up Fast Food Frenzy Unit 7: Rational Explorations: Numbers and their Opposites Sample Activity: What’s your Sign? B = 80-89 Above average achievement at assigned performance level. C = 70-79 Average achievement at assigned performance level. F = 0-69 Failure to achieve at assigned performance level. GRADING SYSTEM: Tests and Projects = 40%, Quizzes = 25%, Homework = 10%, and Class Work = 25%. Math tests and quizzes will be scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays. PROGRESS REPORTS/DEFICIENCY NOTICES: All students will receive a progress report every four and a half weeks. Please make sure to sign and return the progress report. Students in jeopardy of failing will be issued a deficiency notice ABSENCES AND LATE WORK: I do not accept late work without an absence. If absent, students are required to make up all missed assignments (tests, quizzes, homework, projects and class work). MAKE-UP WORK It is the student's responsibility to ask the teacher for make-up work immediately upon returning to school. If a test was scheduled before the student was absent, then the student may be required to take the test the day he/she returns unless other arrangements have been made. If a student has missed work and his/her absence is not due to truancy, the teacher will give the student the opportunity to make up the work. Generally, one day for each day of excused absence will be provided for the make-up work. Failure to meet the deadline will result in a "50". HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned every night Monday thru Thursday and occasionally on Friday. The homework should only take 15-20 minutes. Homework is an important part of the learning process for math, and it is crucial that it is completed and turned in ON TIME. You may call the APS Homework Hotline at 678-553-3029 or visit www.MyHomeworkHotline.org for homework help. CONFERENCES AND COMMUNICATION: If you would like to schedule a conference, or if you have any questions or concerns about your child, with me, please email the need to me. Our parent conference days are Thursdays, I will try to arrange a meeting time within 2 weeks. I will return emails within two school days of receipt. If I do not respond, please try sending the email again. We’ve had problems with our email system and I might not receive the email. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: I expect all work turned in to be honest, and from that student. If any child is caught cheating or helping another student cheat on ANY WORK, he/she will earn a 0% on that assignment, and cannot be made up. Cheating does not put our best foot forward and will not be tolerated! VERIFICATION OF PARENT RECEIPT: Please complete the verification of parent receipt by Monday, August 10th, 2015.
