TECHNICAL LEAD (Contract position to July 2013 with the opportunity for extension) SOUTHERN AFRICA LABOUR AND DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH UNIT FACULTY OF COMMERCE The National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS) finds and interviews 30,000 individuals at two yearly intervals on behalf of The Presidency. The NIDS team at SALDRU controls this fieldwork, collates and analyses the data. Working with a full-time staff of approximately 12 research and survey specialists and up to fifteen part-time staff, you will lead the continual improvement of our database, call centre and research systems. This position runs until the end of July 2013 with the opportunity of extending the contract subject to securing funding. Requirements include: B. Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Information Technology/Systems) or Certified SQL 2008 Manager. A minimum of 3 years working experience with database design. A minimum of 3 years working experience with .Net development software (including 2008 or a later version), preferably C# and MS SQL. Significant experience in writing SQL queries. Knowledge of MS Access or similar database software. Added Advantage: Working knowledge of statistical software, preferably STATA, will be an advantage. Working with the Survey Director the responsibilities include: Providing creative continual improvement of our custom database and call centre systems. Maintaining and improving systems storing confidential contact information of respondents, including all historical information (e.g. previous addresses & contact history). Writing ad hoc SQL queries and reports to support researchers. Improving a user interfaces for the call center and database users. Maintenance and improvement of the field equipment inventory systems. Ensuring compatibility between databases. Training users how to use new applications and functions in the software. Ensuring the timely release of new versions of the software to all appropriate workstations. Interacting with third party IT services and equipment suppliers. Ensuring backup systems protect the security and integrity of the data. Ensuring a secure and reliable NIDS network. Assignment and oversight of tasks to a junior programmer to assist you in the execution of the above. The 2012 annual remuneration for this level position is between R 291 599 and R 343 018.
