Student Development Officer
Education Development Unit (EDU)
Faculty of Commerce
The Education Development Unit (EDU) in the Faculty of Commerce at UCT is seeking an experienced person for this
position for appointment from January 2013.
Responsibilities:








Plan, develop and implement the student development programmes within the EDU and the broader Faculty of
Commerce
Coordinate and facilitate the existing Step UP programme, a 6-month course focused on student transition
into Higher Education
Coordinate, implement and administer mentoring programmes in the EDU and the Faculty of Commerce,
including recruitment, training and supervision of student mentors
Plan, develop and implement leadership programmes for students in the EDU
Conduct individual student consultations, offer advice and /or refer to appropriate services.
Scan the environment to assess student needs, and initiate appropriate programmes as needed
Liaise with appropriate service units across the university
Engage in qualitative and quantitative evaluation programmes
Requirements:







At least 3 years’ post qualification experience of student development within an education environment
(preferably Higher Education)
An appropriate Master’s degree related to this field of work
Demonstrable course and/or programme development skills
Demonstrable coordination and facilitation skills (individual consultations, facilitation of small and large
groups, supervision of students)
Competency to use IT for academic and administrative purposes
Good professional written and oral communication skills
Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a team and independently
The following would be advantageous:

Registration with a professional Social Work or Counselling body

Multilingualism in the South African languages

A Master’s degree specializing in counselling psychology, clinical psychology or clinical social work

Experience working with students from diverse back grounds
The annual remuneration package, including benefits for 2012 is between R291 599 and R343 018.
