DIRECTOR: CANCER RESEARCH
FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES
The University of Cape Town (UCT) Faculty of Health Sciences is currently seeking to appoint a Director of
Cancer Research. This is a fixed-term, 5-year contract post renewable, depending on the availability of
funding. The level of appointment is at either Professor or Associate Professor.
Requirements include:
 A PhD in Health Sciences OR a Medical Doctor with a relevant specialist registration
 Academic status as a cancer researcher
 Management experience in an academic environment
 Strong leadership and communication skills
 Diversity management skills and the ability to lead research programmes
 The ability to mobilise resources
 A multidisciplinary approach
Experience in high-level liaison with stakeholders and professional boards would be advantageous.
Responsibilities include:
 Developing and implementing a collaborative cancer research framework that strengthens individual
and institutional research within the university
 Developing and implementing a strategic plan for cancer research to ensure that the knowledge
generated can be translated into preventive, therapeutic, and public health strategies
 Developing collaborations with other national and international academic institutions and research
groups
 Spearheading the Faculty’s efforts to raise funds for cancer research
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain direct involvement in her/his own cancer-related
research activities, in synergy with the above responsibilities.
