Fr Michael writes: On this Sunday the Church opens for us the season of Advent. At the beginning of today’s liturgy we bless the Advent wreath and light the first candle. The light which symbolises Jesus our life and our salvation will guide us towards Christmas. However, before we celebrate Christmas and the first coming of Christ in flesh: as a little baby, we are all invited to reflect on the second coming of Jesus at the end of times when he will come again, this time not as a humble baby but with power and glory. I wonder if we are ready for that? On this first week of Advent Christ invites us to prepare for this Christmas but also for the unexpected event of his second coming. He calls us to “stay awake and pray so that on that day we will be ready and confident. Christmas Fayre: Grateful thanks to all who helped in any way at the Christmas Fayre, yesterday Saturday. Pilgrimage for 2015: As you know each year I take a group on pilgrimage. This group is composed of various people where I have worked as a priest over the years. In 2015 I have organised a pilgrimage to Budapest and Prague both cities of religious significance. It will take place from Monday 21st September from Heathrow to Budapest returning on Sunday 27th September from Prague to Heathrow. In Budapest there will be a full tour of the city visiting the famous Matthias Church; the Royal Palace and St. Stephen’s Basilica to revere the relic of St. Stephen. We will visit Esztergom the birthplace of St. Istran and one of the most sacred cities in Hungary. We visit many other Churches and take a boat ride along the Danube. In Prague we will visit Wenceslas Square; the Church of Our Lady of the Snows; the National Museum; Opera House; St. Ignatius Church and the Church of Saints Cyril and Metrodius. The highlight of the trip will be to Our Lady of Victorious and the 16th Century statue of the Infant of Prague. We will travel to Strahov Monastery one of the oldest monasteries in the world with the shrine of St. Norbert. The cost of the pilgrimage is £998 which includes scheduled flight; accommodation in 4 star hotels; breakfast and evening meals. All excursions and entrance fees; tour manager and local guides. If anyone is interested in going then please see Fr. Michael Refurbishment of the Hall: Beginning on 5th January 2015 the Lower Hall is to be refurbished. We will install a new kitchen with complete cooking facilities; dishwasher etc. The hall will be redecorated and new tables will be purchased. The ladies and gents toilets will be refurbished and a new toilet for the disabled will be installed including nappy changing facilities. The stair lift will then be repaired or replaced which will give access to our hall for the disabled and more elderly. The cost of all the refurbishment will be met by the Growing in Faith Campaign and which will be paid to us in instalments over five years. You will remember that in achieving our Growing in Faith target we are given funds for our own use which we said would make our buildings safe and refurbish our hall. Refurbishment will take about six weeks during which all hall users can use the Upper Hall and access to one toilet. At the completion of works all users will then use the new and comfortable lower hall and the upper hall which at present is rarely used is to be leased to the offices at the top of our building to bring in badly needed revenue to our parish which as you know has changed over the years as the socio-geographic structure of the area has changed. Ratcliffe College Past Pupils: This Thursday 4th December 2014 at 7pm our Church is hosting the Ratcliffe College Past Students Carol Service. We welcome them to our parish. Mother and Toddler Group: After the refurbishment of our hall we are starting every Thursday morning a Mother and Toddler Group. This will be organised by Fiorenza Shepherd – and will be a much needed parish support for young mothers and babies. If you are interested in joining this group please let Fr. Michael know. Collections for last weekend amounted to £242.50 Envelopes, £517.60 Loose plate, Total £760.10 Many thanks Retiring Collection: Catholic Youth Service £23.23 Have a good week Fr.
