Business Development Manager: Drug Discovery
(3-year contract)

The Drug Discovery Development Centre (H3-D), in the Department of Chemistry is looking for a competent and
innovative Business Development Manager, for appointment from 1 November 2013, or soon thereafter.
The successful applicant will work with the Director to expand business development in South Africa, raise funding
from South African funding organisations and perform business operations management activities, including the
development of business models, marketing and sales strategies, and will oversee the financial management of
the Drug Discovery & Development Centre (H3-D) in the Department of Chemistry at UCT.
Minimum Requirements include:

MSc degree in Natural Sciences or equivalent and an advanced business /marketing qualification

3 years’ financial management experience, with proven business experience essential.

A strong understanding of the South African National System of Innovation, its stakeholders and key role
players is essential

Computer literacy (Excel, Word, etc) and excellent communication skills
Advantageous:

An MBA qualification

A strong understanding of the South African funding environment and information systems related to
research and development activities
Duties and responsibilities:

Development of Marketing and Sales Strategies and alignment with all other international initiatives

Represent H3-D Centre at South African events and local forums and participate in relevant local
programmes and forums that support the Centre’s overall strategic objectives

Develop Business Models for H3-D and its various service and product offerings

Put business operations in place and ensure relevant strategies, policies, procedures and documentation
are in order for each of the following focus areas with assistance from Finance Officer and assist with dayto-day operational management of H3-D as necessary

Coordinate the development of Business Strategies with Directors, Exco, Steering Committee and Scientific
Advisory Committee

Lead Informatics infrastructure development to facilitate data capture, data management with attendant
development of workflows and processes in support of H3-D R&D and Business Activities

Prepare funding proposals and business plans suitable for South African funding opportunities

Manage relationships with South African Funding Organisations

Identify suitable talent for H3-D Centre

The annual remuneration package, including benefits is between R542 073 and R637 748.
