Revised Fall 2011 MGMT 2083, Introduction to Retail Store Management Course Philosophy and Instructor Requirements Philosophy: This course is designed to aid students in seeking a general knowledge of contemporary issues in retailing within the larger area of marketing. There is an emphasis placed on decision making relative to such integrated variables as store location and layout, sales promotion, buying, pricing, personnel management, credit, and stock control. Instructor Objectives: The instructor's teaching techniques should ensure that the students are able to: Understand the economic significance of retailing institutions in our society Explain the operational characteristics of retail establishments and their significance in supply chain management Understand the legal requirements in "standing up" a new retail business enterprise Develop an understanding of the financial and mathematical concepts in planning and operating a retail organization Course Teaching Requirements: The following should be followed by all instructors teaching this course (online and in the traditional setting): The instructor may use whatever techniques and methods they deem necessary and/or appropriate to achieve the aforementioned learning objectives. Assessment Responsibilities: Examinations, quizzes, and homework assignments should be structured in such a way to properly assess the student's knowledge of contemporary and emerging concepts in retail store management. A term paper may be required or assessed in substitution of a major exam. The final exam must have a comprehensive component and weigh approximately 20-25 percent of the semester grade. Instructors teaching this course (online or traditional) are expected to participate in assessment activities as required by the University.
