Researcher – Engineering and Software ‘Fault detection and diagnosis project’ Informatics Research Unit for Sustainable Engineering College of Engineering and Informatics Ref. No: 56-12 The Informatics Research Unit for Sustainable Engineering (IRUSE) research group at NUI Galway seeks a highly motivated engineer with at least 3+ years industry experience and a recognised postgraduate degree or equivalent in an engineering or computer science related discipline. If you have a proven track record in delivering successful projects, a passion for researching and developing solutions to problems as they are encountered, and the communication skills to illustrate technical solutions to non-technical people, then this job is for you. IRUSE is a multicultural research cluster performing research on energy efficiency in buildings, leveraging advances in information and communication technologies. IRUSE has a strong collaboration with leading industry and academic institutions around the world. We perform research in the areas of: fault detection and diagnosis in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems; whole building and reduced order approaches to energy simulation; HVAC systems integration and optimisation; innovative instrumentation including wireless sensor networks; and stakeholder-driven visualisation of building performance data. The successful candidate will work with a team of researchers focusing on a specific project within the Innovation for Ireland’s Energy Efficiency (I2E2) Technology Centre: the automated fault detection and diagnosis of large air conditioning units. There are currently over 20 pilot units in the project, operating on six industrial sites: Analog Devices (Limerick), Boston Scientific (Galway), DePuy (Cork), EMC (Cork), Intel (Dublin), Pfizer (Dublin). Everyday tasks Aid in the development of a software application to perform fault detection and diagnosis on large air conditioning units; Research (and use existing technology solutions) to solve real-world engineering problems related to large Air Handling Units in the HVAC domain; Provide excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; Liaise with industrial partners; Interpret engineering drawings and specifications; Write technical reports and document engineering activities (such as software development). Minimum requirements Honours Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or computer science discipline; A PhD in a related field and 2+ years industry/research based experience, or 5+ years without a PhD; Experience in at least one programming language. Java is preferred, but others (such as extensive VBA experience) may also be suitable; Experience of HVAC systems, preferably related to large air conditioning systems; Excellent communication skills and comfortable working with other people remotely; Self driven to achieve group goals and very capable of working independently. Desired qualities Experience with fault detection and diagnosis in any domain; Experience performing building energy audits in industrial or large commercial sites; Knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS) and/or controls/automation engineering in the buildings domain; Knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer; Knowledge of statistical methods; Relational Database Management Systems such as MySQL and/or SQL Server. Salary: €38,286 - €52,561 per annum (Public sector pay policy in relation to new entrants will apply) This position is primarily based at NUI Galway but will involve travel (approximately 25% of the time) to University College Cork and the I2E2 member companies throughout Ireland. The duration of the post will be from the 10th of August 2012 to the 1st of March 2014. Our research group (www.iruse.ie) is currently comprised of 1 principal investigator, 5 postdoctoral researchers, 6 PhD candidates, 1 research assistant and growing. We are located in the New Engineering Building (NEB) at NUIG, the largest engineering school in Ireland. Informal enquiries about this post can be made to iruse@nuigalway.ie (Tel: +353-91-493358).
