Scholar in Residence - 1916 School of Humanities (History) Ref. No. NUIG-069-15 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Scholar in Residence with the School of Humanities (History) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is available from 1 September 2015 to contract end date of 31 August 2016. This one year research post is being created by the University as part of its commitment to promoting scholarship on the 1916 Rising. The appointee will be part of a team in the Discipline of History: http://www.nuigalway.ie/history/ Job Description: The successful candidate will (a) conduct research on the 1916 Rising and its context in Co. Galway and elsewhere in the West of Ireland; (b) draw attention to resources (especially previously under-utilised resources) for the study of the revolutionary period in the West of Ireland Duties: (a) Prepare a catalogue of resources, in Irish and English, in the NUI Galway archives and elsewhere, with a view to facilitating future research on the political and cultural milieu which produced the West of Ireland revolutionaries of 1916-23; (b) Organise a significant scholarly event highlighting the research potential of the material catalogued; (c) Draw public attention to resources for the study of the 1916 period in the west of Ireland, engaging in particular with communities around Athenry, Rosmuc and Galway city (d) Assist with planned exhibition, ‘Global War / Irish Revolution / University Town, 1914-1923.’ Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a track record of research/publication on the Irish revolutionary period, 1912-23. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in History (or closely-related field) Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills and be highly motivated. Competence in the Irish language will be an advantage, as will the capacity to engage with the public media.
