TEMPLATE C- Individual Placement Description Northern Deanery Foundation School (NDFS) North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust Individual Placement Description Placement Foundation 2 Paediatrics and Community Child Health, WCH The department The Department of Paediatrics comprises 5 Consultant paediatricians of whom 2 are part-time. All do acute General paediatric and neonatal on-call. There are interests in CFS/ME, Gastroenterology, CF, Respiratory, Allergy, Asthma, Medical Education. All paediatric and neonatal pathology is represented. The department is closely linked with tertiary services in Newcastle upon Tyne. The type of work to expect and learning opportunities All F2 Doctors in hospital posts will generally be ward based during the ‘normal’ working day and expected to deliver the daily medical care of all the patients on their ward irrespective of specialty. All F2 doctors will need to pass the NLS course (Neonatal Life Support Course) in order to attend deliveries. There is always senior cover provided and on nightshifts there is senior resident on-call cover. The overall educational objectives of the F2 year are to provide the trainee with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to Take a history and examine a child of all different age ranges Identify and synthesise problems Prescribe safely Keep an accurate and relevant medical record Manage time and clinical priorities effectively Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care Act in a professional manner at all times Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general paediatric problems Educate patients effectively Become life-long learners and teachers Where the placement is based West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven Clinical Supervisor(s) for the placement Dr Deb Lee, Dr Sarah Pennington Main duties of the placement The F2 will be responsible with other staff for the care of the patients on the ward. They will be expected to participate in and pass an NLS (neonatal life support course) in order to attend deliveries. They will have the opportunity to work with consultants in outpatient clinics and take responsibility for general paediatrics and neonates on the ward. They will participate in community child health clinics on a regular basis. They are expected to attend the structured teaching programme in the department.
