Individual Placement Description
The information in this document is based on the experience of the FY2s that have recently
completed this post. The views expressed in this document are not necessarily those of the
West Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust. It is important to note that this description
may be subject to change.
Placement
F2 Acute Paediatrics & Neonates.
The department
The Paediatric Department comprises 5
Consultant Paediatricians all of which do acute
General Paediatric and Neonatal on-call.
There are interests in Epilepsy, Allergy, Asthma,
Diabetes, Nephrology, Haematology,
Dermatology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology and
Neonatology.
All Paediatric and Neonatal pathology is
represented.
The department serves West London and has
close links with Chelsea & Westminster Surgical
Department, Royal Brompton Cardiology /
Respiratory Department and Great Ormond Street
Hospital for tertiary referrals.

The type of work to expect and
learning opportunities
There are no FY1 posts in the department and 1
FY2 post. As an F2 you are on the same rota with
the other SHOs (FY2-ST3 – other SHOs made up
of Paediatric trainees and GP VTS trainees).
The rota is a 12 week cycle and there are 7
clinical areas that are covered and tasks vary
depending on the area;
1. Children’s ward – daily ward duties
2. Day assessment unit – reviews, jaundice clinic
3. Outpatients – educational week to observe/take
clinics under supervision
4. SCBU – daily ward duties in neonatology
5. Postnatal ward – baby checks/reviews
6. Labour ward – attending neonatal emergencies
and high risk deliveries
7. A&E – clerking all children under 1 year and
accepting referrals from A&E for children over a
year old.
The overall educational objectives of the FY2 year
is to provide the trainee with the knowledge, skills
and attitudes to be able to:
 Take a history and examine a patient.
 Identify and synthesise problems.
 Prescribe safely.
 Keep an accurate and relevant medical
record.
 Manage time and clinical priorities
effectively.
 Communicate effectively with patients,
relatives and colleagues.
 Use evidence, guidelines and audit to
benefit patient care.
 Act in a professional manner at all times.
 Cope with ethical and legal issues which
occur during the management of patients
with general medical problems.
 Educate patients effectively.
 Become life-long learners and teachers.
Some of the additional aspects in this rotation
include:
 Child protection issues.
 Paediatric and neonatal life support.
 Paediatric and neonatal procedures.
(Phlebotomy, cannulation, lumbar
punctures etc).
 Understanding of Paediatric and neonatal
disease.

Main duties of the placement
The FY2 doctor is responsible with other staff for
the ward care of patients and the maintenance of
the patient’s medical record.
You will have opportunity to work with the
consultants in outpatients for 1 or 2 weeks during
the rotation.
You will also take responsibility for problems
arising in General Paediatrics or neonatal patients
on the ward.
You will be expected to attend the structured
teaching programmes provided by the department.
Teaching takes place 3 days a week, x-ray
meeting once per week and a perinatal meeting
once per month.
The doctor will be responsible for such other
specific clinical duties as allocated by consultants
including performing other duties in occasional
emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Equal time split between departments listed
above.
On call requirements:
9 nights, 3 weekends.
Evening on-call until 20:00 or 21:30 approximately
once per week.
Approximately 25 zero days / annual leave days
(fixed annual leave).

* Please note that at this Trust the role of the Educational and Clinical Supervisor is merged
into one role. One Educational Supervisor is allocated per placement.
